Trained sniffer dogs to be sent to airport to detect asymptomatic COVID-19 cases

Sniffer dogs, specially trained to detect people infected with COVID-19 who do not exhibit symptoms, will soon be sent to international airports and seaports to help identify asymptomatic cases among arrivals from abroad.

According to the Chula Journal website, the six Labrador retriever dogs, trained by a research team at the Veterinary Faculty of Chulalongkorn University, have a 94.8% accuracy in detection.

Professor Dr. Kaywalee Chatdarong, vice dean of the research and innovations section of the Veterinary Faculty and chief of the project, explained that all the thermal scanners or imaging systems installed at ports of entry or at public venues only detect higher body temperatures and no other symptoms and, therefore, are not effective in detecting asymptomatic cases.

You just can not make this stuff up.  Next they will deploy the dogs to sniff and see if the tourists arriving have enough money in their wallets, and of course the needed insurance.  So then of course there will be no need for the IO to ask or check. On leaving Thailand the dogs will sniff them to make sure they do not have any more cash left, and then they will be found to have Covid so off to the hospital to garner the last amount of money from the Insurance company.  Just saying.

So it'll be your word against the dogs then .. cant see folk wagging their tails in anticipation of flying in if they are being met by mutt's waiting to snout them .. and where are they gonna be sniffing as well is of concern ..

As arrivals are whisked off to quarantine anyway and undergo 2 tests, what is the use of it? If or when these dogs are used, a better place to patrol would be the markets. Then again, they will possibly run off with the meat.

This actually seems like a good idea. There are many articles around that Dogs can detect Covid-19 in patience along with other diseases. Interestingly so humans with ‘super smell’ can also detect Alzheimer’s.

There is a lot to be said for Odour - everything has it to some extent, even if we cannot detect it. 

 

BUT... ALL of that said.... You Thai Bashers out there, please do not let facts get in the way of making complete idiots of yourselves and using this opportunity to blindly throw ridicule at Thailand.

The day will come when vaccinated arrivals will not be required to go through quarantine. How are they going to detect positive cases then? This is a great innervation and we should regard this current phase as 'OJT' (On the Job Training). The more practice they get, the better they'll become.

That day has not yet arrived. The linked article states that the dogs have passed the first stage of training and the second stage is actual practice. My point was that the dogs would be more usefully employed at places where Covid keeps resurfacing, eg markets.

That already exists. They use sniffer dogs to sniff amount of currency on the body at many airports in the US.

Dogs can sniff many illnesses , like cancer etc.

Just be prepared for the fact that you and i, and probably most of us.will have this flue type virus  lying dormant in our bodies.( Dont worry - so far  there is only a 2 percent chance  that it will prove fatal.) .I for one, don't want to be quarantined  and pay an exorbitant  amount of money over something like that.I mean ,come on ,just where does all this end !

This will never happen.

Sniffing tourist-money is a job exclusive to Thai Police force, they have perfected this job since the early 80's.

If you take the trouble to read the article posted by @rabas earlier, you'll discover that these dogs are trained to work in a controlled environment. A meat market is the very antithesis of that! It would more likely cause olfactory confusion than accurate detection!

Better to have them in the environment they have been trained to function at their in.
