Is running an ethernet cable between them and setting up an access point in the 2nd house an option?

This would be ideal.

Do you have a spare ethernet port on your 3BB router - there should be four?

Ethernet cable runs can be up to 100 meters.

So if you can run a cable (CAT6), have the spare port and buy a second router, that might be the best performing option?

There are other options, which include connecting a secondary router over WiFi, but that may offer more limited performance.

What types of devices does your son have/use?

Another option: when one external electricity cable serves as a supply for both houses, then 2 powerlines adapters can be used, having ethernet ports and/or wifi.
