Daily News reported on an event held at the Grand Richmond hotel yesterday hosted by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation and the Office of Accident Prevention.

Dancing girls and long drummers in traditional outfits got everyone in the mood for some serious words about road safety, deaths of children and DUI at Songkran.

The backdrop of the event featured a sign that mentioned the new normal, no drinking and driving at Songkran and a tagline about getting home safely in the holidays.

Rungarun Limlahaphan of the THPF led the way warning that 50% of accidents at New Year and Songkran involved alcohol.

DUI, speeding and lack of helmets were the leading reasons people were seriously injured and died.

Calls were made to the public to make sure they rested up properly in the three days before Songkran when returning home for the holidays.

Reminders that shops would be held liable if there were accidents involving the sale of alcohol to minors sent there by parents involved in drinking circles.

And stats about the carnage among youth were given.

According to a survey of 1,151 young people in 2019 26.2% had come off a motorcycle and slid along the ground.

9.4% had been involved in a collision and 5.4% had been seriously injured.

Well there's an idea! Let's see how effective it is! ???? Who's in the mood?

Time to do some actual road enforcement and visits by the RTP to the local villages and stop all of the motorbikes zipping around while intoxicated and ....oh well I believe it will always be a lost cause.  Just be safe yourself folks, out your head on a swivel and drive, bike, or walk with a high visual horizon and watch out for those not watching out for you or themselves.
