Daily News reported that the Royal Thai Police will set up 1,200 of their new "transparent" checkpoints nationwide to stop drink driving during next week's Songkran holidays.

Yesterday at RTP HQ chief Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk and deputy Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat and other senior leaders held a 2 hour meeting to discuss Songkran policing.

Immigration, the highway police and the tourist police were all involved.

Apart from the usual problems of what to do about safety on the roads this year there are many extra problems on Suwat's plate - migrant incursions across the borders and social distancing requirements at events to name but two.

How to mobilize manpower and use of equipment were high up on the agenda.

After the meeting Suwat said that the government had set a target of 5% accident reduction compared to an average of the last three years.

He noted that the emergency decree was still in place after it was extended to the end of next month.

He called on the public to help the police by ensuring there was no water throwing and no foam parties - both have been banned this year.

Damrongsak said that the exodus to people's home provinces would be similar to 2019 with 3.5 million people expected to travel from this Friday to Sunday and 3.7 million from the 15th to the 18th April coming back.

He said that 1,200 drink driving checkpoints following the new transparency rules would be set up to stop DUI.

In addition there would be another 1,700 checkpoints to check for other infringements on the roads.

All nice in theory, but we all know that they seldom (ever?) enforce any of these new guidelines, laws and measures.

I'm dying to know what the fatality rate's going to be this year (no pun intended).  Higher? The same? Lower?

Be nice if some of these people would fall on their swords when it all goes bits up as usual

They could have 12,000 check-points... it's what happens after they're caught that matters.

A fine is pointless.

In most countries, having defective lights, exhaust, road tax, etc, which are minor offenses are only given fines, what do you suggest the death penalty??

Fines for the minor offenses is okay, but these checkpoints are being set-up primarily for DUI.
In which fines have proven to be ineffective.

So 1200 to check for DUI p***heads, and 1700 to check road tax, insurance, licences, tyres, lights, exhaust etc.

Why not have 2900 checkpoints for eveything, or is that too logical?

Also Covid tests for everyone stopped would be good.

The problem is the time taken to actually do those tests.

But totally agree. In UK EVERYBODY is going to be given two free test kits per week starting on Friday. That is 100 MILLION PER WEEK !

The way Covid numbers are rising it would be better to cancel Songkran completely; ban all internal travel and set up road blocks to apprehend anyone trying to break the ban.   Sounds very tough but it's the only sure way of stopping an explosion of cases once the 'Festivities' are over !

That'll be about 29,000 sitting in tents doing next to nothing, 2 shifts of 5 in each checkpoint per day. Get them on the roads with high visibility.

Absolutely, there should be zero tolerance.

1,200 Road Checkpoints to Curb Drink-driving and Covid-19

By Subhabhong Rarueysong

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Royal Thai Police Office will set up at least 1,200 road checkpoints to curb drink-driving, while local police will control Covid-19 spreaders, during the Songkran festival next week.

National police chief Pol Gen Suwat Jangyodsuk said the goal was to reduce traffic accidents during the holiday by at least 5% from figures recorded over the last three years.

He said In addition to traffic safety, measures will be implemented to prevent and contain the spread of Covid-19 during the holiday. This is because there might be infected people trying to enter the country illegally to work in tourist destinations or night entertainment venues.

Pol Gen Suwat reiterated previous warnings that a ban on water splashing and foam parties would be enforced for the sake of public health. However, the traditional rod nam dam hua (seeking blessings from the elderly) ceremonies are exempt, although participants must strictly follow health safety measures.

5% seems a pathetic target. How about some mass resignings for incompetence  if the numbers actually go up?
