Many Moons ago i lived in the West Country Town of Weston-Super-Mare; or 'Weston-Super-Mud' as it was known to locals, because the shifting Mud that looks like Sand starts about halfway down the 'Beach' (Sand) and will suck anything under that weighs more than about half a kilo'.   Hence; many 'Tourists', mainly coming down from the West Midlands, would drive down the concrete ramps and onto the Sand or attempt to walk out much further than they should until they start to sink.  Subequently many people had to be rescued from certain death as the tide rose and almost weekly there would be a Vehicle submerged by the fast rising water and it was rare for a Vehicle to be 'rescued'.    All this despite huge warning notices all along the Promenade, up the length of the Pier and in the nearby Town Centre.     One of the reasons for the loss of so many Vehicles was people driving their '4X4's onto the Sand because they believed they could get out of any kind of trouble in these hyped up Macho types and they would appear astonished as they watched them sink into oblivion faster than the Titanic.

It is my belief that the only 'true' 4x4 Vehicle is a Land Rover;  just take a trip up to the works and watch them testing them on the works 'Jungle Trail' against just about every other type of so called '4x4' and see what survives by the end of the tests !

4x4 vehicles just allow one to become REALLY stuck. All the gears and suspension don't help if the car is tilted enough and has a carburetor. Gasoline is not supposed to come out the top of the carburetor.

I know that from personal experience on a logging road high up the mountains in Montana. My brother and I spent hours walking in the darkness down the mountain for help. ????

Not seen the videos then. I think there may even be a Top Gear one!

No I haven't really watched Top Gear for years now not since Quentin Wilson was on. The Panda was just an example of a smaller 4x4. It's going to have more grip but I wouldn't expect it to cope like a Land Rover or Landcruiser off road.

Just checked and although not Top Gear this is pretty good.

I was actually thinking more of the older Fiat and also more in terms of the suspension articulation and ground clearance. I must admit this one looks pretty good fun though.

I did get to drive a Suzuki SJ40 off road and that was pretty good and could get through trees better than a Land Rover.

MB? Motorbike?

Mercedes Benz mate.

Used to be a Bimmer man but no longer. Went over to the darkside. The interior quality, styling and looks of the new cars does it for me over BMW, who seem to have lost the plot recently.

And also funny, I bought my new Isuzu MU-X recently in January, and yes a 4 wheel drive.

After I sold my 10 years old Fortuner.

I have to mention, in the Fortuner it was tuned with a "Racechip"

Unfortunately not available for the Isuzu, due to too little demand, they told me in Germany.

The new MU-X looks decent, but only driven the two previous generations.

I looked at the new BMW X5 recently and it was great, but still to look at equivalent MB.

I chose a Benz based on the looks and interior. The new MBUX is incredible.

Had four Range Rover SVR's (not all at the same time)......they are beasts.....sadly the exhausts had to be modified on the 2020 models and they lost their throaty roar when accelerating and 'pop' when decelerating.

Never driven a Fortuner but I imagine it's just like my Hilux with real back seats, extra cup holders, and sat nav.

Got invited to a 'Jeep Jamboree' in Dubai around year 2000, great fun covering 100 Km in the dunes.

Was offered a friends Jeep Renegade what a nimble little car over the sand, never got stuck once, but dug plenty of the heavier Jeeps out, or my mate gave them a quick lesson on how to get unstuck by proper technique.

Loser of the day getting stuck more than any other and ending up on its side when attempting a rather too steep downward slope. Dodge Durango!
