there was an old thread on this in 2011 which looks dead now

plus techniques have improved from the standard TRUS(Transrectal Ultrasound)

For me, in the next few weeks, I need a Prostate biopsy but specifically ive been recommeded an MRI Fusion TRUS biopsy.

It's when they use the data from the last MRI to specifically locate(like a GPS) the lesion and target that as opposed to random tests throughout the prostate.

im looking for prices if anyone has had this(or just standard prostate biopsy) and which hospital/feedback

Im in Hua Hin and im assuming Bangkok is looking most likely to go

Some notes so far....

-Bangkok Hospital in Petchaburi wanted 40,000 for a standard TRUS

-Bangkok Hospital in Hua Hin want 150,000 baht for MRI fusion and 90,000 for standard TRUS

so comparing their own TRUS price(1 hour away in another province) this seems grossly excessive.

Im not insured and they know that. Ive read on here they charge more for that!

Im told that this proceedure can be done at Siriraj but i cant get any sense out of them at the moment

any help appreciated, thanks

MRI fusion, around 150K at Bumrungrad in 2018.

My advice would be to have systematic MP-MRIs first and go for MRI fusion biopsy if Pi-Rads >= 3 OR DRE suspicious. That's what I am doing now anyway...

I had an MRI last year in Hua Hin at Hua Hin Hospital, cost was 11k.  The MRI showed two legions.  I chose to get treated in Bangkok and went to Siriraj Hospital at Sheryl's recommendation.  I was able to get a CD with the MRI results from Hua Hin Hospital and take that to the doctor in Bangkok.  After reading the MRI results he suggested an MRI guided prostate biopsy.  Anyway the Biopsy was done not only on the areas pinpointed by the MRI but throughout the prostate as well.  I believe the total cost including an overnight stay at the Hospital was around 56k baht.

The problem, as Sheryl pointed out is contacting them....

-Ive filled out the online contact form(no response )

- i ve rung about 4 numbers on website. All seem to be personal mobiles and as soon as i start talking English they hang up!

I had to go there in person to make the appointment.  I actually saw my doctor at Thonburi Hospital (private but not too expensive) where I was able to make an online appointment.  After seeing him I went to Siriraj the next day to the Urology department on the 3rd floor to register and asked to make an appointment to see him there.  Got an appointment a couple of weeks later if I remember correctly to review the MRI results I brought with me (the IT dept has to load it into the system).  It was kind of a pain but it worked out ok.

I was just there Tuesday night and it was like a ghost town, got there 45 minutes early and I was the only one in the Urology department where my doctor is.  I am seeing Dr. Sittiporn, but there is at least one other urlogist there as well.  You will need to go to the new Out Patient Department.  google maps location 13.756827527693396, 100.4837237714864  It is a big campus and easy to go to the wrong location.

Looking at my appointment slip there is an email and phone number you might try first, if you did not try them already.  Tel: 0-2419-9801, email: [email protected].   I would recommend having a Thai person call or go with you when you are able to make an appointment.

Tell them you want to make an appointment for a consultation with a urologist.

Hope this helps

P.S. If you want to meet up for lunch sometime let me know.

Siriraj is your best bet for this but you will have trouble getting information without going thee in person

Sheryl on the money again....

reponse from Siriraj today

As you might have been heard our story before, Siriraj Hospital is the busiest public hospital in Thailand. We have to treat people over 10,000 out-patients every day! (this number does not include thousands of in-patients). So, we can not provide information such as medical consultation, treatment rates, or appointments via phone or internet as in a private hospital because we don't have enough workforce. If you wish to receive the services at Siriraj Hospital, you have to come to our hospital and register at room No.101 on the 1st floor, OPD Building (Out-Patient Department Building), and go to the relevant clinic later.

by way of update

i can have the MRI fusion TRUS biopsy in Hua Hin at Bangkok Hospital

However i think they are up to their usual tricks re loading the bill!

please see extract from an e mail i sent this morning, should be self explanatory

does anyone agree that these Med clearance proceedures are over the top?

(the covid test is of course totally understandable)

i believe they are seeking an additional 6,600 baht for these tests(see below)

look forward to hearing from anyone but especially Sheryl

thanks

Med clearance procedure-This is the first i have heard of these (Chest xray, electrocardiogram, blood tests)......... are these included in the fixed price? Because they are totally unnecessary for a prostate biopsy. I have not had these in the UK(for both TRUS biopsy and Perennial Mapping biopsy) and they are not done elsewhere in the world. But i will have the tests provided they are included in the fixed price. Please note i will not pay extra for unnecessary tests that i was not made aware of.

The email you responded to was probably a boilerplate for surgical procedures (which the biopsy is, albeit an outpatient surgery) and not necessarily describing requirements specific to the procedure you will have.

I can't see any reason for a chest Xray or EKG for this. But some blood work is advisable especially coagulation profile and blood count. You should be able to get those done at an outside lab if you prefer and bring the results with you.

Anyone had a standard MRI of Prostate(with contrast ) in say last 18 months either in Bangkok, Hua Hin or somewhere in between (eg Petchaburi)?

Looking for update on costs....

After that i will need the MRI Fusion TRUS biopsy but i will focus on costs for that later( i had it done in Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin in May '21 at a cost of 115,000 baht all in) Yes i know it can be done cheaper in Bkk, as i say i'll get to that discussion next

First up is standard MRI(+contrast)

Cheers all
