I have left my country ( France ) more than ten years aga and I miss 4 things : cheese, bread, charcuterie ( cooked pork meats ) ( French  people  always miss food ) and walking ( beautiful country ) ; for the rest, no, I like people here  , language, weather, food etc ... it's my country now

Yes, I have had both and more times than my waistline cares to admit.  I was king of junk food consumers back in the day, everything I eat was from a bag or a box.  Living overseas one must adapt, overcome and persevere to satisfy the trashy culinary cravings. Food and taste can be replicated, it is amazing what tastes one can create with common ingredients.

 

There are many recipes for chik fil-a on line if you just do a search, little practice and very very similar taste.  In n out is just a burger with fries and onion rings.  Yes it is better than most other fast food but still just a quality burger, nothing special to it. 

 

If you need the little foil bag or the card board boat for the burger or starafoam cups or disposable dinner ware in plastic  for ambiance that is a different matter.

I have been here almost 6 years now, and I still remember when I was in the home country, constantly saying to myself, can't wait till I get to Thailand and build me a big house with all the mod cons that I want so I can enjoy (my castle), I mean her castle.

 

8 year later I arrived and have never looked back, I live in the sticks, I enjoy not having neighbours butted up to my boundaries, e.g. back home it would be like 3 metres separates your house with your neighbours either side, 6 metres at the rear, so you are basically looking into each others rooms.

 

I don't get bored, I can read, can watch a movie or a series, visit a local waterhole to down a few cold ones when I want to socialise in the evening and play some pool.

 

When Covid is downsized to a basic flu by years end hopefully, I will travel oversees to see my mum and my adult daughter, some close friends and do the scenic costal drive that I used to love doing on my bike 2 up with the wife, visit some restaurants that we used to go to and reminisce and then return to the Thai coast for a weeks holidays trying to not to look at the cost of the oversees trip, before we return to the bush here as big cities now freak me out, to think I once worked in a city, in a skyscraper on the 55th floor blows me away, as I could do anything crowded today.

 

If your comfortable in your castle and have money to get you by, then boredom shouldn't be an issue.

Of course.  Did that in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Haiti.  Adapting, Overcoming and Persevering are easier in LOS but once in a while an In-N-Out is pure pleasure.   Used to be able to fly to Los Angeles twice or three times a year.  Not so much anymore.  I am challenged in the cooking department.

In Ca besides In N Out burger which is OK, you have 5 guys and "The Habit" Now the Habit has superb burgers and a tasty Grilled tuna sandwich. If I wasn't living real close to the beach here in Thailand I'd like Thailand less. It's so convenient here where I am. 

 

There's just so many things I haven't seen in the USA that I want to once the covid rules slacken.

Not   one    little    bit. Work blew out this time got stuck in my old home state for 2 weeks made me realise how much I definitely don't ever want to come back. 

Do I miss UK; never.  I miss my kids, but never that country.

I mean in the winter.  As a young kid, I remember loads of snow, fun building a snowman, sliding down snowy hills etc.  Now I think UK winters are mostly cold, drizzly rain....

 

Before I moved to live in Thailand, I lived in Andorra, in the Pyrenee mountains, with cross-country skiing on my doorstep, duty-free booze and food, very clean, highest standard of healthcare in the world.

 

When I'm done with online teaching, I hope to retire back to Andorra or nearby in the mountains, since elderly healthcare in Laos is probably not so good!

I miss the UK, especially Scotland. more so since my parents passed away as they were my last and frequent anchor there. I still have family and friends in Lancs and London so I would normally be visiting them between bouts of my deep cover, covert ops* that dried up due to Covid. Being bottled-up in Thailand for 15 months has brought me closer to my Thai family but I miss getting out and about for my reality checks. I really enjoyed Cape Verde, Senegal, The Gambia, Portugal, Vietnam and Australia, all of which I hit in 2019/20.

 

*I'm actually oilfield trash but those are dirty words these days. More socially acceptable to tell people I do 'wet work'.

Mmmm. That still to me sounds like a 'waiting to die' type of existence. Maybe you have convinced yourself that you have a good life, but sitting around all day watching tv?..I suppose it also depends on how old you are.

The only things I miss about Australia are a grass-fed Gippsland eye fillet steak, done medium, King Island blue brie cheese, and a decent shiraz to go with both. If you can find me those items here at prices that are not eye-watering, I'm all ears.
