BANGKOK (NNT) - The AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is currently being administered to the elderly in Thailand, and no adverse reactions were reported in most recipients. A large batch of the AstraZeneca vaccine is also available for young adults. According to studies, they may experience fever, body aches or swelling and redness around the injection spot. These effects will disappear in 24 hours.

Head of the Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Prof. Dr. Yong Poovorawan, today provided information about administering the AstraZeneca vaccine to young adults, who are more susceptible to adverse reactions than the elderly.

Prof. Dr. Yong said that everyone must understand that working-age adults are more likely to experience fever or body aches than the elderly, after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Not many senior people have complained about having a fever after receiving the dose. With more doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to arrive soon, recipients who are under 30 years of age may have to take paracetamol, a medication used to treat fever and moderate pain, once they return home.

According to the Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology, some young recipients may experience adverse events, such as swelling and redness around the injection site. Common side effects, including fever, are temporary, and will disappear in 24 hours. However, in rare cases, these effects may last two to three days.

Studies show that young adults, who have a strong reaction after receiving the vaccine, will trigger a strong immune responses. It is normal that women have higher immune responses than men, and young people have higher immune responses than the elderly. If everyone understands the issue, they won’t panic if they have side effects. People who have severe side effects are advised seek medical attention.

Sure millennials will act like a fouled professional footballer and post their ails and aches on twitter and facebook for the next 6 months

And no doubt 'blame the elderly' coz it's all our fault - "how dare you" & all that nonsense. ????

Case in point, are the 9  Nurses & their (over) reaction:

These, as I remember, are reactions that one might get from a 'flu jab - no, I'm not saying Covid & influenza  are the same....????

Really shocked the article tells young people to take paracetamol for their headache

Australia's health warning is if you get really bad headaches after AZ seek immediate medical attention

Wondering why no mention of the AZ blood clots?

AZ blood clot risk is the reason a lot of countries have banned AZ completely, or mandated only allowed for a certain age (e.g. Australia banned AZ for under 50's)

Don't tell Thailand... it has no other plan.

Yep, here is a recent study from Denmark, I have copied and pasted the conclusion, but if you want to read the whole study as I did, go for it.

CONCLUSIONS:

Our study provides evidence of an excess rate of venous thromboembolism, including cerebral venous thrombosis, among recipients of the Oxford-AstraZeneca covid-19 vaccine ChAdOx1-S within 28 days of the first dose. The absolute risks of these events were, however, small. For the remaining safety outcomes, results were reassuring, with slightly higher rates of thrombocytopenia/coagulation disorders and bleeding, which could be influenced by heightened surveillance. The absolute risks described in this study are small in the context of the proven benefits of vaccination against covid-19, and the globally high incidence of serious cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

I suggest it is stretch to include 'banned AZ completely' and 'mandated for a certain age' in the same sentence and with the same prefix as 'a lot of countries'.

AFAIK - 1 country, Denmark has 'banned AZ completely'.

Happy to be corrected...

Switzerland and US never approved AZ in the first place

Immediate side effects of AZ are not serious,  thats true. They can be treated with paracetamol.

About 50% of people will be sick for about 48hrs, feverish for maybe 24 hours. Including people over 60.

These numbers are from Europe,  where a social security net means "sick means sick". In Thailand,  people are used/forced to go to work with fever and malaise, so maybe he is not downplaying side effects but just culturally adapting.

The much feared cerebral thromboses are very serious and happen about 2 weeks after vaccination.  Mostly in people under 50. You should not take paracetamol but seek medical attention,  as posted above.

Maybe he forgot them,  they are very rare:

If, in theory, you would vaccinate every Thai with AZ (which isn't going to happen and has never been the plan) you would kill a few dozen young, healthy girls.

Head of the Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Som Tam seller, Lek Pornhub , today provided information about administering the AstraZeneca vaccine to young adults, who are more susceptible to adverse reactions than the elderly.

Som Tam seller, Lek Pornhub said that everyone must understand that working-age adults are more likely to experience fever or body aches than the elderly, after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Every person that can read the international news could have stated this, why do they always let a proffesor do this . Would be much funnier and as true if they would let a local taxi driver or som tam seller do it .

Astra Zeneca : the risk of thrombosis is 8.4 per 1 million vaccinated
1 flight of more than 4 hours : the risk of thrombosis is 166 for 1 million travelers
Contraceptive pill : the risk of thrombosis is 500 per 1 million women
Pregnancy : the risk of thrombosis is 600 per 1 million women
COVID-19 : the risk of thrombosis is 1,400 for 1 million hospitalized patients
Cigarette : the risk of thrombosis is 2940 per 1 million smokers

The researchers counted the number of venous and arterial thrombosis reported between December 13, 2020 and March 16, 2021 to the Vigibase database of the WHO Collaborating Center for International Pharmacovigilance (Uppsala, Sweden).

A total of 2161 thrombotic events were reported, including 1197 reports for Pfizer's vaccine, 325 for Moderna and 639 for AstraZeneca, over a 94-day period.

Most cases of thrombosis due to vaccinations affect young women.

The risk benefit is always favorable to the vaccine

you reduce things there. Because you miss the timing effect.

Look as it is:

You will never have a thrombosis reaction after to smoke one time, but you can eventually have one after one AZ shot.

So, you should not reduce things you do not understand really.

The only drawback is he wouldn't commit to the AZ shot ! Forgot to mention I'm sixty eight .

I also have my name on the list for a Moderna vacc at Wattana hospital in Udon!

If the village DR, try's  to give me sinovac ,I will decline !

You forget a few very important details.... :

Astrazeneca induced thrombosis is not comparable to normal thrombosis, it is : Thrombocytopenia is a condition whereby the numbers of thrombocytes (very small blood particles, or platelets) are markedly reducedIn severe cases, thrombocytopenia can be fatal. There have been deaths from blood clots reportedly associated with the AstraZeneca vaccine, including 19 in the United Kingdom

This condition has a fatality rate of 40%, much much higher than "normal" trombosis.  So the death rate is 4 per million. In a country like thailand this could mean that you send 28 healthy people to their deaths. Just because you want to vaccinate against the POSSIBILITY that you get covid. It's not a certainty that you get infected, however it is a certainty that you get the vaccine.....

Not check some facts, check ALL the facts.

So 28 Thais die if everyone is vaccinated (how long does immunity last? over 6 months). That many die every day from Covid in Thailand. So a positive result after 2 days. Your argument may work for Australia, New Zealand and a few other countries with little or no Covid, but that's all. And those countries are just delaying the issue.

Oh, and your maths look suspect! Death rate 4 per million surely you mean 272? Still a win after 2 weeks.

You are quite right it's 272... Even more reason to forget about astrazenica... Don't forget it's healthy young people you are killing

Your logic only works if those 272 would have died from Covid anyway. In reality they would be young healthy people dying of AZ blood clots in addition to the Covid patients

It has been studied before, you cannot just compare it.

Chances are very low indeed compared to other types of blood clots, but mortality by VITT is very high, around 30 - 40 %.

We will of course hear about this from some thai doctor in 2-3 months.

And then we can comment his smart findings on TW.

It has to be an unusual severe headache lasting for more than 3-4 days, but, it is perfectly understandable if one gets anxious about having a headache, in such context.
