Many areas in Narathiwat province were temporarily closed after Covid-19 Network Investigations reported that the strain of the virus found in South Africa was found among infected persons in the Tak Bai area.

They decided that Yakang floating market and walking streets near Phraya Sai Dam and Attarkiah Islamiah Institute would be closed for at least two weeks or until the situation is resolved.

Is that a poll involving expats only or the ordinary Thais? I highly doubt the average Thai even knows that the J&J and Moderna vaccines even exist.

Here is a similar study in Philippines among the ordinary folks:

Moderna scores only 1%....is that because they think it is bad and ineffective? Much more likely they've never heard about it.

Not directly related to vaccine  confidence but here is a screen shot from yesterday's  Phuket Times. If I am not allowed a screen shot then please delete it. It is in Thai but it shows the number of vaccine doses administered to date in Phuket and also shows that a further 229,000 have registered for the first hab of the next batch of 200,000 just delivered.

This variant is worrisome as it affects human immune response and can lower the efficacy of most vaccines.

it may require a higher percentage of the country to be vaccinated before herd immunity is possible. The group of scientists, who reported these findings yesterday to the Public Health Ministry, has been working with the Thai government throughout the Covid-19 pandemic studying genome sequencing in the virus.

Tend to agree there, although its mentioned in the OP there is a separate thread on the significance of the South African strain running here:

In Thailand, the variant was identified in three test samples from a cluster of infections that could be linked to illegal migration in the south of the country, the COVID-19 Network Investigations Alliance said in a report.

“The variant may impact human immunity response from the virus and reduce the effectiveness of the vaccine,” said the alliance, which conducts genomics surveillance and research and has worked closely with the government during the pandemic.

“This does not mean that the vaccines do not work but there must be an increase in the ratio of population receiving the vaccine,” the report said.

Yes it is in the OP but for me, so my opinion, is the possibility of numbers of infected being swept under the rug. The recent cases in factories etc do do not seem to be inluded. If they are then it would only be around a thousand give or take positives outside of these clusters. That would represent around a 50% reduction in positives from around a week ago before these many, many clusters began to be identified.

Please provide specific numbers of infections that are not included in the daily numbers.

I wonder if the delay is because they tested positive and are now awaiting the second confirmatory test? Not sure if that is still the system being used by the authorities, but it might explain the delay.

or maybe they are in the numbers ????‍♂️

You may be confusing persons under investigation with actual infected people.

The actual numbers of infected in Phetchaburi is mucher smaller:

So zero proactive testing outside of known clusters and prisons or zero cases found through proactive testing outside of prisons or known clusters.

very difficult to know what to believe, so many contradictory reports from many sources and countries

What contradictory reports would those be. All the studies that measure such things show that Sinovac's vaccine is very effective at curtailing serious symptoms and death.

Instead they opt to locally manufacture (with major delays) a single vaccine which is currently suspended in quite a few countries, and import random doses from a single Chinese manufacturer without any clear pattern and strategy.

Letting their greed get in the way of their greed.

The news briefing today said public health officials there had tested 698 high risk contacts to the Thai businessman who was the original source of the outbreak, and found 81 positive cases for an 11.6 percent positivity rate, along with two other linked cases in the community, for a total of 83.

Of those 83 thus far, 67 are still hospitalized, and 16 have recovered. No deaths thus far. The Thai businessman who was the source of the outbreak also has recovered and been released from the hospital.

This needs more than 2 weeks now, I think 4 weeks would be minimum in Bangkok. New peak today despite the predictions of some that this was all over, very sad situation

Fortunately the lock-down fetishists don't look like they're going to get their way.

Yes I was listening to it. I mentioned before in another post the time lag between testing and then actually discovering the variant allows it to spread more. However hopefully they've identified all the contacts and will be able to contain this. They are correct to seal the area's concerned

MoPH graphic showing the 2,922 general population new COVID cases reported Sunday is the highest single day tally of its kind since the start of the pandemic.

The general population tally includes all self-referred cases (shown in  blue) and cases found through outreach testing (shown in yellow). It excludes only the prison population cases shown below in gray, which have been sporadically reported.
