I recall three Japanese girls walking past me down hill from Monk's trail in CM. Having never been passed by a female was a new experience. Since then I stopped competing altogether. In the last two years it has taken a while to adjust to my new reality. I was a fast walker as well, but now back with the crowd and even my wife can keep up. Sad, isn't it.

It was the best move in my life. I had another really good 10 years of living. I see others working until they are 65 or beyond. Like my dad. Worked into his 70. Took retirement, bought snow-bird house in Tucson, bought a new car and other stuff for retirement - died two months later. I took the last chunk of the best years of my life and had fun and enjoyed. Now I'm very happy with a quiet live out in the sticks with little or no drama. I think work is not the problem I like my work and if I wouldn't get paid to work with computers I would still play with computers. Personally I think it's important not to stress ourselves with work we don't like and responsibilities. I make less money than a top manager. And I have a lot less stress. I have time for long lunches and coffee breaks and I take it easy. No grey hair and no ulcer. Even if I would have an accident today I could think in my last minute that I had a good life.

I realize this probably sounds dumb, but it's small things that weren't issues before. I'm noticing quality differences in food and drink a lot more than before. It's getting harder to roll out of bed in the morning and go from 0-100, especially after a late night. Muscles feel slightly tight or slightly more sore slightly more often. Etcetera. It's not affecting performance in a big way yet, but then you look at the runway ahead and realize that it could just be downhill from here, it does make you feel kind of old, yeah. The weight of time is there in a way that it wasn't before. I turned 30 last month and I agree.

OneMoreFarang
Obviously it's nice if we feel not old. But sometimes it seems older guys just don't see the reality. I know a couple of guys who were fit when I met them and maybe 10 years longer. But some of them are now 75 and older and to say it in not so nice words: they are losing their marbles. Like: Really, did you forget already what I told you 10 minutes ago? I wonder how many of these guys would still consider themselves fit and smart. I won't ask them because otherwise they might ask me why I ask them...

Popular Post Acharn
I dunno. I'm 84, and I don't actually feel old. I feel normal, but get tired quicker than I used to. I really need a nap in the afternoon, but that seems more like boredom (I'm retired, so there's not much I need to do). I have some aches and pains and muscle weaknesses, but I don't associate those with "old." It helps to exercise regularly. Walking as much as you can is good. Taking the stairs at the subway or MRT is good. Laz-E Boy lounges are very bad.

Popular Post Pilotman
you can easily check upon how old you are by recording the decibel level of the groan you make as you stand up from a chair, or heave yourself out of bed. If you add a few expletives in the process, then you are definitely old.

Moti24
Only recently! I was stuck in The UK for 8 months last year. But got plenty of exercise and fresh air. When I finally did get back to Thailand, I was feeling fit, healthy and rejuvenated. However, I turned 70 recently, and although I don't have any unexpected symptoms of old age, knowing that I'm back at the bottom of the pile, underneath Soi Dogs, and not having much hope of vaccination this side of Christmas, it does depress me a little. But, what's really wearing me down is reading the constant daily TAT drivel about how many tourists are coming this year and how much they are going to spend. So, I think my time in the paradise that once was is getting very close; in The UK, it's called, "Constructive Dismissal".
Popular Post ABCbangkok
Physically I was doing great until early 60s and then the juice just wasn’t there. Slowing down physically has been good though as there is less stress about performance and image and keeping up. However cognitively I’ve never been better. So much so that I have a theory that the mind (not brain) never grows old. At 65 I’m working towards a PhD in psychology and philosophy. Deeply serious <deleted>. Unless the brain breaks down due to something beyond my control I’m going to continue the challenge of learning something meaningful on a personal level. ( At 92, my Mom still has all her marbles and knows how to play them. She’s still lucid, reads, and is still giving her three boys, all in their 60s, motherly advice as to how to navigate life. ???? She simply never gives up.) Edited June 10, 2021 by ABCbangkok
Surasak
Direct answer to the OP. When you realise they don't make mirrors like they used to, all roads are now up hill, and the friend you haven't seen for years looks so much older than you remember, you then know you are old. Oh! And don't say I didn't tell you so.????

For some, Thailand has become depressive and oppressive due to COVID. I felt the daily grind of the latest screwup by the leaders. Just got out and feel much better for it. Life for me though was mainly downtown Bangkok. Life in the provinces perhaps far better. Closer to nature.

Genetics are a key determinant, but other than that regular exercise, healthy eating and doing things that you enjoy helps a lot … and avoiding stress. I haven’t worked for a long time and that’s been great in relieving stress. I don’t think people should work until they drop, no matter how well they enjoy it.
ICELANDMAN
It is only a matter of accounting in the sense of how many years have your parents or close relatives lived from there you can calculate how many years you have left to live. Lowering the average by a certain degree if you reside in Thailand, today I drove only 160 km I found three big accidents, one had required at least a dozen ambulances. Popular Post Toscano
When I was in my 50s I felt I was still 25 like my elder son . I have been very fortunate to lead a free and active life riding my horses or sailing a yacht in the summer . I have traveled and had a good lovelife . I had a heart attack when I was 78 , was operated and had 3 stents inserted . In a strange way the COVID19 pandemic has been a Godsend , last year when Lockdown came and the elderly were ordered to stay at home , I started to use my elliptical exercise machine that I had hitherto found rather hard work . I do a sort of interval training with a moderately high resistance , pedal , push and pull to 100 , rest and then again , each time I'm slightly out of breath but not stressed , I do 400 a day . Now a year later I have lost my paunch and 24lbs in weight , I'm 84 and feel amazingly young agile and fit , no aches or pains , I go cycling daily , as well a brisk walk . I live in Thailand , my wife is a school head teacher , she suffers from head aches , all over body aches , is tired and thinks she is old . My worry now is that my world that I have enjoyed is finished , the pandemic is like WWIII without a shot being fired and may never end , there seems nothing to live for , I'm afraid of living too long .
