AIIMs director Randeep Guleria (PTI photo) The new Delta Plus variant of the coronavirus is extremely transmissible, and even walking next to a Covid-19 patient who is a carrier of this variant without a mask may lead to the spread of infection, AIIMs director Randeep Guleria told India Today on Tuesday. Guleria said though following Covid-appropriate behavior will help to a great extent against the new variant, the government is concerned about the immune escape mechanism of the Delta Plus variant and its resistance to monoclonal antibodies. "This is being studied by INSACOG, a network of labs undertaking genomic sequencing in India and we will know if vaccines are effective against this variant or not," Guleria said. Another way of phrasing that is to say that they're looking into the next generation of the current variant and right now they know absolutely nothing about it. This is always the same when there's another mutation, for all they know it could be almost harmless and do nothing but make people have a runny nose and create antibodies, you know, like a cold.
June 24, 20214 yr Great. People should now that currently, in England, the indian variant kills more (twice in proportion) the vaccinated than the... unvaccinated. Disbelief ? Well, those are the official data from the UK gvt... June 24, 20214 yr Yes, the Delta variant is rather worrying. A few reports on this subject 1. A recent Nature article (22/06) with a general discussion of the Delta variant https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-01696-3 2. In Israel (with almost 60% fully vaccinated, all with BioNTech-Pfizer) there has been a sharp uptick in infections and various restrictions may be imposed again https://www.timesofisrael.com/bennett-urges-israelis-not-to-travel-abroad-amid-rise-in-covid-infections/ 3. Some observations from the US: https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/delta-variant-us-cases/2021/06/23/ca715f8c-d371-11eb-9f29-e9e6c9e843c6_story.html 4. A more moderate tone in this article from the BBC, mainly based on experience from India. It basically says that data -as for now- are insufficient to make definite conclusions: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-57564560

PHE report June 18th 2021: This is an impressive report, but doubt that more than 5 persons on this forum have actually read this since the popular subjects mainly seem to resolve around alcohol and bar girls. Anyway, I think one should not just pick one table from the article but look at it overall. For instance, in Table 10 it says that that vaccine effectiveness against symptomatic disease from Alpha and Delta variants is 88 and 80%, respectively , whereas effectiveness against hospitalization is 92 and 94%, respectively (not statistically significant, Fig. 11). Also, case fatality in the Delta group is much lower than for the Alpha variant (Table 2), but I am not sure whether there is a time factor here. It is a pity that there is no breakdown of vaccines, i.e. what were the numbers for AZ and BioNTech-Pfizer, respectively? Finally, the ID rate is very impressive with 60 up to almost 90% of samples sequenced or genotyped (Fig. 1).
