PHUKET: A search has been launched for a Thai man who was last seen dragged out to deeper waters by a strong current at Freedom Beach, south of Patong, earlier this afternoon (Aug 2).

Sen Sgt Maj Boonyarit Inthakarn of the Patong Police was called to the beach at about 2:10pm.

Thanakit Srisuwanwichian, 21, explained to the officers that he and his friend Akkarapol Pattranonwere swimming together when they both started being dragged away from the shore.

I got pulled out there in October 91. No life guard or net back then. Very scary experience. The current goes south to north and the riptide pulls you out at the north end of the beach. The trick is to first swim straight south a little bit to get out of the riptide and the toward the beach at a 45 degree angle. Scary!

Don't fight the rip (or else you will be RIP) and let it take you offshore a ways and then swim parallel to the shore (either direction) and the current will actually bring you back in (or you can swim to shore with the current). Swim and play where the waves are breaking and not where it appears calm as that's where the rip is located.
