My buddy and I will be travelling to Thailand at the end of July. We will be flying into Bangkok then we are wanting to rent a car and drive to Chiang Mai for a few days. What I would like to know is if anyone makes this trip on occassion, how the roads are, and just how feasible this trip is. I know it is about 700 km from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, so is 8-9 hrs a reasonable estimate of the travel time required for this trip.

Also, if anyone has detailed diretions for this trek I would appreciate it.
