Thai foreign policy is frequently characterised by the metaphor of bamboo bending with the wind. The simultaneous strength and flexibility of bamboo suggests a foreign policy that is both adaptable and pragmatic in its aim of securing national survival and independence. Within this discourse, Thailand blatantly plays one great power off against the others.

By Suchat Sritama

Bangkok-city-downtown.jpg

Recent survey shows the number of active hotels in Thailand increased to 48.4 per cent in August from 40.1 per cent in July, in part due to hotels in Bangkok pivoting to long-term stays; Bangkok skyline pictured

Although hotels in Thailand saw a slight uptick in occupancy rate nationwide in August, alongside an increase in the number of active hotels, a majority of hoteliers will either close business temporarily or permanently if the pandemic continues to drag on, according to a recent survey.

Warning from Pattaya hotel industry boss of a Chinese takeover, loss of income to the economy

by James Morris and Son Nguyen

pattaya-hotel-boss-warns-of-chinese-takeover.jpg

Hotel industry leader Phisut Sae-khu has called for a suspension of debt repayment for hotel owners in Pattaya until the foreign tourism industry returns to normal as he warned that they face extreme financial difficulty and are ready to sell out to investors from China. It comes as efforts to relaunch foreign tourism in October under ‘new normal’ arrangements and Sandbox schemes appear to be losing momentum with the country still well behind on its vaccination targets and a lack of interest from visitors.

The Minister of Tourism and Sports, Mr Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, last week talked of a nationwide reopening to foreign tourists without quarantine based on the kingdom achieving herd immunity as defined by the Thai government.
