COVID-19: Thailand reports 13,798 new coronavirus cases and 144 deaths

Thailand on Wednesday (September 15) reported 13,798 new COVID-19 cases, 14,133 recoveries and 144 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

 

● 14,133 recoveries

● 13,347 new infections 

● 451 prison / prison infections

 

Wednesday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 1,420,340 with 14,765 deaths.

 

(Total infections since April 1: 1,391,477)

 

The news comes as almost 130,000 youths in Thailand, aged between 6 and 18, were found to be infected with COVID-19 from April until September 11, with 69,628 cases alone in August, said Dr. Suwanchai Wattayingcharoenchai, director-general of Health Services Department, yesterday (Tuesday).

 

Of all the cases since April, 116,742 are Thai and 12,423 are non-Thai. Infections among youths were 2,426 cases in April this year, 6,432 cases in May, 6,023 cases in June to 31,377 cases in July before skyrocketing in August, even though all schools remain closed.

Looks like a slight bump upward, but then yesterday's could be seen as weekend numbers.  With what I am seeing it pretty much looks like a plateau based upon the amount of testing has been reached.  I hope the vaccinations will reach the intended level sooner than later and we can just as this government wants "Learn to live with Covid, and open up like the west has done.  Sure we will still see cases, but then it is an ever mutating virus, and boosters will be needed just like with the annual flu vaccinations.

Up to 20% of Thais report suffering from lingering Covid effects, says Department of Medical Services

 

The Department of Medical Services has announced that 10% to 20% of Thai Covid patients suffer from lingering Covid effects, a post-syndrome that is also known as “long Covid”, but the department adds that multiple terms have been used to characterise the syndrome. Long Covid can persist for weeks, and sometimes months after a patient has recovered from the virus. Dr Piamlap Sangsayan, the Pulmonary Medicine chief of the DMS’ Central Chest Institute of Thailand, says the frequency of long Covid symptoms may go up with factors such as age, obesity, and daily steroid use.

Ministry of Tourism pushing for October reopening but some officials apprehensive

 

The Minister of Tourism Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn is pushing for an October 1 reopening for Bangkok and surrounding provinces even as officials remain apprehensive due to high infection numbers and the ongoing pandemic, a senior health official told Thai Enquirer on Wednesday.

we've seen several days of less than 200 deaths over the last week, that is encouraging.  still have alot more deaths to go as the curve comes down.  and of course we could see another wave but hopefully the vaccines will help if/when the next one hits.  as it stands now, thailand sits 91st out of 155 countries in terms of deaths per capita.  expressed as death per million residents, thailand is at roughly 200.  if the death count doubles from here and the country gets to 400 (when this is generally over), they'll manage to be in the back half of the 155 countries.   hope we've seen the worst of it but you never know.  i thought this thing was nearly done and then delta showed up.

The Department of Health is planning to expand its “Sandbox Safety Zone in School” project to day schools after it proved to be successful with boarding schools.

 

Director-general Dr Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoenchai said on Tuesday that the department had launched the campaign for on-site classes at boarding schools.

In line with the project, schools set up a separate screening, quarantine and safe or green zones. This project was deemed successful despite some infections via contact with outsiders.

2 Bangkok bus drivers, 2 conductors test positive

 

The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) announced on Tuesday that four of its public bus staff members have tested positive for Covid-19.

Those infected include drivers of bus numbers 505 and 23, and the conductors of bus number 517 and the shuttle that runs between Bangkok’s Bang Pho area and the Bang Sue Grand Station.

The driver of bus number 505 had been worked from August 31 to September 5 and then again on September 9.

Sound advice which sadly not everyone follows. 
 

Avoid busy areas at peak times, such as trains, markets, malls where you may struggle to keep socially distant, especially if you are not fully vaccinated.

Some caution needs to be shown when using these figures. You have quoted figures for the entire duration of the pandemic but ~95% of cases and deaths have occurred since April this year so the current rates per million appear very low. Worldometers does have a weekly trends option which gives rates for the last 7 days and that is currently showing 1403 and 19 (cases/deaths per million).

 

19 per mn puts Thailand at #50 on the list (208 on list). Another caveat on this - many of the higher rate countries are very small in terms of population (only 4 out the top 10 have more than 1mn), so their rates appear very high e.g. St Kitts and Nevis has a death rate of 76/mn in the last 7 days. 3 people died, but as the population is only 53600, the figure appears high. One single death would put its rate higher than Thailand's current rate.

 

The overall trend currently in Thailand is certainly encouraging but there is still a long way to go.

Mass vaccination of Thai students being prepared for reopening of schools in November

Education Permanent Secretary Supat Champathong said today (Wednesday) that there are about 4.35 million students at schools under the supervision of the offices of the Basic Education, the Vocational Education and the Office of Private Education commissions, who are to be inoculated on a voluntary basis, expected to commence in early October.

Never been to one but a few weeks ago we had a small group of Thai teachers visit us at school, I work in an International School that additionally has some boarding accommodation. 
 

Their visit was to just see our policies and how procedures were carried out.As you can imagine there are quite a few when a school is not only educating but also caring for them 24/7. However when we realized they did not even have a child protection policy, we knew everything else would be downhill.
