Charismatic cop Pol Lt-Gen Surachet Hakpan - the man known as Big Joke - was at Chumphon Provincial police HQ yesterday to announce arrests of key figures in a 600 million baht extortion/ human trafficking racket.

It involved the smuggling of Myanmar and Rohingya people into Thailand then onto Malaysia.

The operations of a gang came to light following three separate cases earlier in the year in which two vans with migrants were stopped followed by the arrest of two men from Myanmar.

It was soon discovered the cases were connected.

It involved smuggling migrants into Thailand in the Mae Sot area of Tak, in the north west.

Then through a series of safe houses in Pathum Thani, Bangkok, Surat Thani, Nakhon Sri Thammarat, Songkhla and Narathiwas the migrants were moved south.

These houses effectively imprisoned the migrants who were extorted along with their relatives.

Arrest warrants were sought for 14 people. Seven were made, some got away. Searches were made in Mae Sot, Sungei Kolok and Narathiwas.

Along with earlier arrests 14 were made in total in further information supplied by the Region 8 chief Pol Lt-Gen Amphol Buarapporn.

Wasn't the Big Joke supposed to reform the Police Force?

Well, he must have finished since he can do this other stuff now...

He was.

But his skill set is now required on a more pressing issue - that of Illegal Immigration and People Trafficking.

Thailand is starting to get flack again from all over the Globe on this issue, and is sliding down the rankings in rapid order.
