Certificate of Residency in Chiang Mai
I recently went to CM immigration to obtain the CoR. I am on the DTV and want to try and open a bank account and buy a motorbike in my name. They asked me the purpose for the CoR but when I said I want to buy a motorbike, she asked to see the purchase deed of the bike, to which I replied I haven't bought one yet. In that case it was not possible to get the CoR for the motorbike, she said. She could however issue me a CoR for opening a bank account and they would send it to me in 10 to 14 business days. I asked if an expedited option was available (since I read everywhere you can pay 500 baht and get it the next day) and she told me that no, cannot. I still haven't received my certificate thus far (it's been 11 business days). A few days ago, I finally bought a motorbike. I am still quite confused though about the COR and the "purpose" that one wants it for; will it state on the COR what the its purpose is, and will the transport office refuse it when I try to transfer the motorbike, because its purpose was to open a bank account? Is it better to go back to immigration and get another certificate, even though the first one hasn't arrived yet? And why do all websites and friends here tell me that I can get it the next day for 500 baht and at the office they tell me it's not possible? Should I go at a time that it's not so busy? 😉 -

Is Thailand Value for money
I would question your first sentence but I welcome any statistics you have to back up your claim. I know about a dozen US millionaires, half of whom I am fairly familiar with their financials, and their homes make up about half of their million in assets, not 'most'. The other half would be stocks, 401ks, mutual funds, cars, furnishings, etc., other investments, and, in 3 or 4 cases, gold. One example, of those I know. School teacher, retired, age 74. She has the two things I mentioned in my earlier post. 1. Greatest Generation parents. 2. Homeowner. She inherited money in the form of stocks from her parents in 2019. At the time the stocks were worth about $300,000. They are now worth $428,000. Like many Americans, she purchased a home during her working years, which she now owns mortgage-free. The home has increased in value over the last 35 or 40 years and is now worth about $500,000. She and her husband, who did pool maintenance, own 2 cars with a combined value of about $50,000. They also own a large boat. I have no idea of the value but I have been on it and you can sleep aboard it. Let's say $50,000. I think we are over 1 million already and I haven't figured in her husband's assets--he also inherited money from Greatest Generation parents. He and I have talked stocks and I know he also has a stock portfolio, which likely has grown, along with his wife's. The key takeaway from my example is how ordinary these two are. Neither had an exotic, super high-paying job. Neither won the lottery. Neither, as far as I know, bought Apple at $22 a share when it went public. Neither did anything special except lucking out with GG parents and wisely buying a home. I think a good chunk of America's millionaires would be variations of this example. Your second sentence makes little sense. Millionaires in the US are scattered all over, not lumped in one place. If 5% chose to sell at one time, the 5% would also be scattered all over, with little, if any, impact on the market. It could be that 5% of millionaires' homes are already on the market at any given time--I'm too lazy to check as it's not worth bothering with. I also don't think millionaires have any more trouble selling their homes than anyone else does, should they choose to--especially with the number of millionaires growing every year--500,000 in 2019, for example. If a home is just half of someone's million in assets, as I think it is for many, the house selling would be in the 500,000 dollar range, a normal price in many places in the US and not a bridge too far for a lot of buyers. -

I accept that, but if the guy was 66 years old, just returned to Thailand and was riding it a big bike then it wasn't a renter and he was likely a very experienced rider. I never rode a bike until I arrived in Thailand 18 years ago and I gravitated from a click to a Neuvo to a PCX to a Forza. I feel comfortable and safe on the Forza but rarely exceed 100 kph; I usually ride at 80-100 kph, less when conditions demand it. I am 68 years old and have told myself that the moment there are any signs of my driving skills deteriorating then the bike will go. -

Since Covid and the explosion in Grab etc delivery services, there has been a massive rise in motorcyclists riding the wrong way, through red lights and weaving in and out of lanes. Police ignore this behaviour. This has translated into the behaviour of the majority of motorcyclists. No wonder they get crushed and die. I would not be surprised if these girls were riding against traffic, but it’s still the drunk driver’s fault. -

71-Year-Old Woman Dies After Rescue Boat Capsizes in Chiang Saen Area
It appears the small rescue vessel is caught in a river vortex, possibly from a subsurface drain or similar. This will suck the boat in and under. Maybe the boat was unpowered and could not be navigated in the swift waters. The video shows a Rescue Jetski type craft in rapidly moving water, and needing good skill to maintain position in the current. This is a sad event, with CM now about 50% impacted by flood waters, with shortages of food and water becoming a real concern.- 1

Bringing Meat/Cheese into Thailand
I bring back things I can't get here, and under the limits. Cereal, spaghetti sauces, pretzels, salad dressings, pasta, tuna, spray butter, and a few more, never a problem as only for personal use.
