Police in Samut Prakan have charged a 41 year old man with negligence causing death at a four story garment shop in Muang district.

On Wednesday a 5 year old boy called Ball died after getting his head caught between the left and the structure surrounding it.

After an interrogation lasting hours Sao admitted what happened.

He had not noticed that Ball - the son of a staffer - was leaning out when he operated the lift.

Police told Sanook that the lift is manually operated by two ropes - one for up and one for down.

Goods were being taken from the third to the fourth floor for storage when the incident happened.

The owner of the store put down 200,000 baht to bail the charged man.

An investigation is underway to see if the lift complies with standards.

Excellent. The store owner, as the person ultimately responsible for sanctioning use of this manually operated lift, appears to be taking some degree of responsibility. Since the child that was killed appears to be from an employee, it suggests that the average standards of workplace safety are in place.

A 5 year old child of a staffer at work killed in a manually operated supply lift at the work-place...

should never have been there.
