You never know. One day they might help leaders to sneak out of the country...

No need to sneak out, you just ask to go O/S for some sporting event or get someone to drive you to the border.

I'm guessing from history the Japanese identified a key weakness in defence.

I heard Prayut was a hippie in the sixites. That explains it all.

Toys for the boys,  and never mind the plebs they can carry on foraging for food etc, etc,

This Government is despicable...

The crew will be battle ready and hardened , with years of experience "go go dancer's"

Surfacing next to the unsuspecting ships and luring them into harbor, I can only imagine the horrors that will occur after in harbor.

I cannot agree. The CIA agents based in Pattaya have proof that Laos is going to invade Thailand to control the world’s Somtum production.

And the submarines will be vital in surveillance of Laos intentions!

Not much needed for upkeep when it will lay alongside the rusting Aircraft Carrier and only be open to THAI people during annual open days.  Meanwhile they will both be fully crewed 'just in case' they have to go to sea in Combat...Lol  !

We must be prepared for the marauders of Myanmar, the vicious Viets, and the clamoring Cambodians. Not to mention the Malaysian monsters of the sea. So many threats to contend with.

Submarines were vital for the country's defence - at least according to vice admiral Pokkrong Manathatphailin.

Quite obviously this more-than-smart-cookie of navy executive has equally not the slightest clue of what he is farting about. The shallow shores of Thailand would call for crawling submarines; the Russians said "Njet" and likewise the Chinese did not feature this in their product listing.

It is about massive "pourboire" - take while the taking is good. Thailand has not seen any submarine in the last almost 60 years and the Americans lost the Vietnam war some 45 years back NOT because of the absence of submarines.

But yeah, the submarines would reindorse the brainless stupidity of the circus full of uniformed clowns with their decision some decades back when they commissioned an aircraft carrier which, most of the time at least, is moored at Sattahip and carries heavier weight in barnacles than on defunct aircraft.

Next please!

But they had decided not to buy new ones for now.

Has Thailand got deep enough waters for a submarine to serve its purpose I don’t think it has and if that’s the case it’s pointless having one

They wouldn't deploy a submarine to the Gulf of Thailand, it would be in the Andaman Sea to the west which is much deeper and borders the Indian Ocean.
