Transferwise

Recommended Posts

I want to send money to a couple of Thai friends that I've known for years. I haven't sent money to Thailand in many years and, from what I can gather on this site, Transferwise is the best way to send about $100. Yes, I know what I am doing and am not crazy. Well, maybe a little. But that's needed in today's world.

I am asking because I would imagine things may have changed with the Covid thing. Up-to-date instructions and tips would be appreciated.

What do they need to do to get the money? What do they need to tell me?

Kawp khun krup.

Sounds like you don't have a Transferwise account yet.

And that is the first job to do. Setup an account.

Do you plan to use it repeatedly in the future?

Otherwise I might be questionable to go through account setup (load up ID, proof of address) just for a single use of $100.

Going on ‘Wise’ website might be a good start.

I have read some good tips in the past so I am asking. Thanks for the reply. Do you agree with the other poster that Western Union would be more appropriate?

Thanks for the knowledge. What is the best way for a single use?

I've never used Western Union so can't comment. I'm happy with Wise which I use for all international transfers and foreign payments. But if you only need to do a couple of one off payments the need to create an account and confirm ID with Wise may be more than you wish to do.

Thanks. Having never done this before comments by others who have are very helpful.

Where do Thais pick up money sent to them via Western Union if I choose the cash option? 7-11? or?

Sincerely doubt that 7/11 offers western union, but places like KTB Bank, Bangkok Bank or Thailand Post offices do

Check here: https://www.westernunion.com/th/en/find-locations.html

Isn't WU like the most expensive & inconvenient way to send money.  2022 ... just send to their bank account.

I should ask everyone for their idea of the best way to send $100 each to two people.

Thanks for the insight.

just fold it up in a note and mail it, registered if you want added security

Go with Wise: I don’t think they will do full account verification if you only send $100 once, at least that was the experience of both myself and a friend, when we first used it.

But account verification is taking a photo and a selfie or so, and then waiting a few hours, not that hard.

Yes. But some people have been using it a long time and there is the force of habit.

(wrong quote)

Just did a check about Western Union with their website.

Sending 2000 Euro would result in 71092 Baht.

If I would send 2000 Euro with TW it would result in 73111 Baht.

2000 Baht lost with cr*p rate. One Baht less per Euro

WU only if there is no other option.

Depends on your bank.  Mine, I just request to wire on line, and they transfer to where ever, and it's free.

Free at your bank? Even if in this case they will hide cost with a bad rate or some intermediate banks grabbing money

Is that true with a small amount like $60-100 also? Thanks
