Thailand on Monday (February 28) reported 22,311 new COVID-19 cases, 17,470 recoveries and 42 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

▶︎ Infections outside prisons: 22,175. Prisons: 136

▶︎ Recoveries: 17,470

Monday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,891,927 with 22,933 deaths.

The news comes as the Ministry of Public Health is now aiming to re-categorize COVID-19 as an endemic disease within four months, saying the transition will be facilitated by a “detect, dispense, conclude” protocol that will soon be implemented for outpatients.

Dr Kiattiphum Wongrajit, permanent secretary for the Ministry of Public Health, explained that under the “detect, dispense, conclude” service, suspected cases will be tested using antigen test kits (ATKs).

A positive result will prompt a doctor to dispense medication under three formulas. The first formula employs Favipiravir drugs while the second involves green chiretta. The third formula dispenses treatments for cough, fever or runny nose according to a patients’ symptoms.

Looking at the purple and green bar chart from BKK Brian, I think there is a trend that Monday/Tuesday reportings (I assume from Saturday & Sunday test results?) seem to show a dip or levelling. That's the benefit of the 7 day average charts to smooth these things out. That still shows a clear upward momentum for now.

Thailand on Monday reported its lowest daily tally of new COVID cases of the past five days at 22,311, reflecting the new case count from weekend day Sunday. The latest report dropped the country's new case count, at least for one day, below the daily peak of last fall's Delta COVID wave.

Daily COVID deaths, meanwhile, remained at 42 for a second straight day, the highest level of the year, and tallies continued increasing for total COVID patients under care (213,645) and two other key indicators -- serious COVID cases hospitalized (980) and COVID patients requiring intubation to breathe (280), with all three numbers setting new record highs for the year.

For some added context, during the peak of the Delta wave last fall, Thailand's daily COVID case count topped out at 23,418, but the COVID numbers of serious hospital cases and intubated patients peaked above 5,600 and 1,100 respectively, and daily deaths topped 300 for a brief period.

First report since 25th Feb when there were 257 cases and today we get a miniscule drop.

Health officials on Monday (Feb 28) reported 251 new COVID-19 cases in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, of which 65 cases were found in Hua Hin.

Elsewhere in the province, 35 cases were found in Pranburi, 30 cases in Sam Roi Yot, 8 cases in Kuiburi, 22 cases in Thap Sakae, 30 cases in Bang Saphan, 13 cases in Bang Saphan Noi, and 43 cases in Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan.

No new COVID-19 related deaths were reported in the province today.
