Getting an International Drivers License on Koh Samui

Featured Replies

I'll be visiting my home country soon where my drivers license has expired.  I have a 5-year Thai license issued on Koh Samui.  Can I get an International license on the island or do I have to go to Surat Thani or Bangkok to get one?

A/ There is no such thing as an International Driving License. There is only an International Driving Permit and it supplement's your driving license

B/ Where is your home country? In most countries the full Thai license is accepted anyway, so you probably don't need an IDP.

The UK does accept a full Thai driving licence..

I have always been able to hire cars from airports using my Thai DL.

For an International permit, you have to go to Suratthani.

When I went for mine, for hiring a car in Portugal, it was a quick, easy process once you got to the correct floor.

The guard on duty spoke no English.

An international drivers permit - and yes, some countries calls it a "drivers license", including my home country - is only a translation of your drivers license. If the domestic drivers license got latin characters and English text, it's accepted in many, if not most countries.
