Phuket: Thai man sentenced to death for murder of Swiss woman; commuted to life in prison on admission

Featured Replies

Guys.

He won't be out in a few years, such as five or years, as some here are suggesting.

It doesn't work that way.

First, he will get reductions at Amnesty time depending on his " category " as a prisoner which is based on his behaviour in prison.

These amnesties differ from crimes committed. The lowest amnesty is given for drug offences and murderers.

The guy will first move from life to 50 years in the first amnesty and then it differs.

Amnesties are not automatic and do not necessarily get given.

They are handed out on special  and auspicious occasions such as the Kings birthday.

They are actually decided by the government.

The guy will be in there for about 20 years or so.

  • For some heinous crimes such as this one, even the death penalty is too good...

  • Doubt it the way this country work. Pardons, heard of them ? Picking mushrooms without permission is considered a far more heinous crime then murder.

Life in a Thai prison is a more severe banishment that death IMO

He will be pardoned before this decade is out.

Jails are bursting at the seams at the moment.

More likely that after a few years in jail he'll be released (without the international press being notified)

If he admitted it, there is no doubt, therefore he should be executed immediately.

Take a life, you lose your own ! Simple.

No further cost or  inconvenience to anyone ever again.

Admission of guilt should never be a reason to not carry out the correct punishment.

Admission of guilt is always allowed for a negotiated plea or plea bargaining.

What a terrifying, horrific end for that woman to have to endure.  I feel for her family, left to grieve her murder, and no more to share all that life has to offer together.

Anyone who murders another human being should die too!

The death penalty should be abolished. It is often based entirely on admissions of guilt, targets the poor, who cannot afford to defend themselves, is usually part of state and religious repression, is an instrument of poor legal frameworks and is irreversible when evidence to the contrary is uncovered. Life without parole is the best option in such murder cases.

Yes, but only if the court is 100% certain, Can't afford mistakes.

Just read about a Thai guy (in Thailand) abducted a woman, strangled her and set fire to her body.

Sentenced to 33 years......reduced to 4 1/2 years.

Oddly enough he was in the Army????

hope this means his life in prison .not released/pardoned after 2./3 years !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^What a surprise to read here such "knowledgeable" comments (stereotypical, demagogical).

Instead of hearing a 1st-hand experience as here below?

Why not to ask around in the village, there are always few who know something more than from a falang forum.  Or to go and speak with people queueing at the provincial prison for visiting their relatives who are in?

The problem is it isn't much different in jail to the squalor that many of these people live in outside prison

The additional bonus is they get fed and also have access to drugs in prison, so in some ways, they just don't give a damn.

They also don't have to worry about looking after wives and children such is the shallowness of many Thai criminals.

I have seen it first hand and it does not hurt them.

Currently in Thailand, since many years, all capital punishments are always commuted to life sentence.

When considering the high number of innocent people executed in countries where the capital punishment has not (yet) been abolished.

And that somehow makes it right?

Stating facts don't insinuate right or wrong.
