I only believe the numbers out of China, especially when they include a numerical value that is not a whole number. Like the other day when they reported 6 2/3 cases. ????

Underreporting is unavoidable, especially now with the Omicron variants, but I'm getting the impression that some countries have made a genuine effort to show what's going on while others have been putting out meaningless numbers pretty much from the start.

 

Thailand, in my opinion, is firmly in the latter category.

People dying of COVID with comorbidity conditions does NOT mean that COVID was not really the cause of of their death. The underlying cause of death determinations are made by the doctors who complete and record death certificates.

 

And COVID deaths typically do involve other medical conditions, because the disease caused by the virus can cause a multitude of medical problems including respiratory failure, heart failure, kidney failure, stroke, etc etc.

IMO daily, weekly, or whatever Covid cases are unimportant as everyone who wants to be has been vaccinated and the risk of serious illness or death for such people is di minimis. Even for the unvaccinated it's only about one-percent mortality.

Europe, the UK and other countries, seem to have come to that conclusion, although their numbers of infections are still huge and hospitalisations and deaths still high and once again rising compared to officially declared Thailand numbers.

The logic of ending restrictions seems to be 1. The current omicron variant, whilst even more transmissible does not lead to serious illness in the majority of cases. 2. Very high vaccination %, including 3rd booster shot, 3. health services and hospitals are not ( yet anyway) close to being overwhelmed. 4. Their populations have had enough of restrictions ( which never required compulsory hospitalisation/ community isolation unless medically justified, only home confinement) and won't tolerate or comply with their continuance. 5. The cost to governments of free testing and of emergency financial support for those layed off or furloughed in the UK and Europe cannot be sustained ( not a problem for Thailand because far as I know there isn't any such support).

 

Some, such as China ( and therefore Hong Kong) ,  still have the zero tolerance approach with massive city/ regional lockdowns, community confinement, or policed home confinement in response to repeated outbreaks, but does it make any difference? The repeating outbreaks suggest not, to me.

I was always suspicious that Thai Covid stats were inaccurate..... very inaccurate. The best thing to do is look at excess death rate. Practically all deaths are reported, and deaths from all causes follow a seasonal pattern and the 5 yearly average is a pretty good indicator for the 'normal' deaths. Surprisingly, in 2020 the excess death rate stayed low or negative, which does suggest that not many died. 2021 was a different case. Excess deaths were positive for 10 months of the year - often a higher percentage than the UK! A rough estimate suggests that Thai excess deaths in 2021 were about 3 times the reported Covid death rate. So, what did they die of? Obviously Covid. It would be interesting to see what the stated cause of death was - I suspect that the percentage ofrespiratory infections (other than Covid) and circulatory diseases were all up - but what did they really die of? Pretty clear.

If you compare the UK population- wise, 65 million, Thailand 69 million and the time Omicron arrived, about the same time for both countries then Thailand's figures are way off . They will see a BA.2 surge as the UK and the USA are going through, then we now have XE a combinate of BA.1 and BA.2 to displace BA.2.but so far not proving not to be any worse. So Thailand must have some secret, probable answer is ,it has spread through the population quickly and they have acquired natural immunity, as happened in Uganda with 12 % of the population double vaccinated and virtually no cases anymore they report natural acquired immunity from natural infection.

You need to test 100% of the population, daily, to get an accurate figure. As stated above, the breakdown of death statistics is sorely lacking.

Omicron, discovered in South Africa, was detected in the UK at the end of November....and in Thailand early December, but at that time Thailand still had a lot of controls in place and it seemed slow to take off... it has now.

Yes it has, one good friend reports from Hua Hin she has her second infection of Omicron, the first BA1 now she has BA.2 and the whole family has it, first time just the mother and she isolated for 11 days, now the whole family isolating, kids , Mom and dad, but no one is sick , just flue symptoms and mild, so looks like BA.2 is surging ahead and displacing BA.1 which seems to have spread through and now BA.2 is causing a mild second infection.
