Going home for Songkran - GPS takes two Thai ladies into the klong!

Punika, 30, driving a Yaris put her faith in GPS as she drove her friend Monrudee, 23, home for Songkran in Khon Kaen.

 

At 12.30 am this morning at a bend in the darkened road in Kabin sub-district, she drove off the road into a deep klong at an elbow bend. 

 

The ravine was 10 meters deep and both ladies were trapped and going under.

 

But they had the good sense not to panic and called 191.

Soon the day was saved by the Kabinburi police and rescue teams who managed to get to the stricken ladies.

 

Shaken and cold but otherwise unhurt the two occupants of the car were taken to Kabinburi hospital for a check-up.

 

Thai Rath reported that the area of the incident is not just dark but there are diversionary roadworks.

And most of the signage in the area has been stolen and needs replacing.

 

They called on the authorities to act.

I think the GPS & lack of signage had nothing to do with driving off the road into the khlong.

 

I always used the 'dog ran into the road' excuse.  Nobody believed that either ????

Well you learn something everyday!  I never knew that a GPS has control of the steering wheel and brake pedal.

Now, never ever blame a thai woman again for being 24/7 on her phone.

... not sure but I have heard that in similar cases it's generally advised to consider to stop driving any further if and where the road ends and a ravine or the likes takes it's place ... just saying!

So nothing to do with GPS just the usual bend in the road?

My GPS keeps telling me the motorways in BKK are 120KMH

Those pesky Klongs just loom out of the dark when you least expect them.

They come a quite a surprise when you look up from your Mobile Screen or away from your stand alone GPS screen.

GPS is God, and Eyes have been placed in the obsolete bin by many Drivers.

In the early days of GPS, i was driving my daughter to her new flat in a new town, and the GPS insisted i turn right (on a motorway). There was of course, no right turn. It only decided a few miles later, that i needed to do a U turn and then turn left ......? Also sometimes the maps are out of date - when major roadworks (making a tunnel) were happening, it tried to make me take a non-existent route - which would have led to a dead end. GPS is only as good as the data it is programmed with. Same with driverless cars.
