The Consumer Protection Board in Thailand has cleared the Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD of wrongdoing over discount practices that prompted complaints from BYD owners and a subsequent investigation, two sources familiar with the matter said.

 

The government in July launched an investigation into BYD’s local distributor, Rever Automotive, after a complaint alleged they had told buyers that vehicle prices would rise after a discount campaign ended, but instead they cut prices further soon after — by as much as 340,000 baht.



 

 

The Consumer Protection Board wish to thank Rever for the gifts, they needed those brown envelops for postage.

Incidentally, my salesman told me that they received the email from Rever at 3am on the morning of the discounts.

Very interesting numbers........ e.g. Denza with just one model, they hit a gold mine, harvesting in a very lucrative segment. It was in fact one of the very busy corners at the BYD booth.

 

For me - to again look at the Tesla's on display, which by any account is a tech powerhouse, completely fell on their face with the stripped down IKEA style interiors compared to the Chinese competitors, so sad.

These are not sales these are bookings normally as a rule the number of bookings doesn't end with the same number of registrations

I have never seen a model by brand breakdown in these motorshow figures

New taxes for EVs

Excise taxes will be lowered for HEV makers that make an additional investment of at least three billion baht from 2024 to 2027 and use local parts, Mr Narit said. Vehicles will also need to have advanced driver-assistance systems to qualify, he said.
The EV Board also agreed to extend the production period of battery electric vehicles (BEV) under the so-called EV3 measure, which aims to propel EV industry growth. The measure comprises subsidies, reduced import duties for fully assembled cars and an excise tax cut.

 

However, between 2022 and 2023, about 84,000 EVs were imported under the EV3 measure, which means 124,000 vehicles must be produced in 2025.

But due to the current declining car sales, the EV Board decided to extend the production period to help the manufacturers, Mr Narit said.Some EV makers previously raised concerns that EVs produced locally under EV3.0 may have higher prices than EVs imported under EV3.5, putting them at a competitive disadvantage.

That web site is only showing bookings for brands; not at a brand's individual models level.  Maybe there will be more detailed reporting down to the models level by some news agency later on.

My other house sale won't be thru by then and I haven't got my solar in yet.

Around B1.4 mill for the fast one I think, that would be the Sealion 7 with the AWD and bigger battery platform?

Do red ones go faster? 🙂

I think the fast one might be 1.2M until 10/12, you can just pay a 10,000 baht booking fee now I think.

Need to consider battery chemistry.  LR & Performance models are usually not LFP.

 

BEVs perform well enough for me, not sure I need or would use any more hp/torque.  Longer range, realistically, how often will you really need it, especially in TH.   Do you really want to drive 4+ hours without a break ?

 

May be an issue when selling, or if keeping very long term.  More cycles with LFP (ignore MG reference.

Below late breaking car250.com 5 Dec article can give some insight on best selling "registrations" for Nov 2024....to include registrations by models vs just by brand. A registration is a completely done deal sale with vehicle blue book issued...the person is now driving the vehicle with red tags.

The Sun, Moon, Mars, Venus and Jupiter must be lined up in a special configuration not yet recognized by astronomers.

Oh my gosh, just after the first few minutes where this guy says EVs are a lot more expensive, EVs are for wealthier people,  inconvenient for most to drive, making the EV construction sound like it's as complicated as building a spaceship, etc., it told me this guy is just another anti-EVer surely getting some backdoor money from legacy US car manufacturers and the fossil fuel industry.   I then continued to scan thru the video where he continued his anti-EV propaganda...excuse me, I mean his perspective.   But his perspective is full of intentional misinformation.    

 

Now I will admit "in the U.S." EVs are pricey predominately due to customers being a captive audience to legacy car manufacturers (i.e., the GMs, the Fords, etc) who can't make EVs as cheap or offer a wide variety of EV models as Chinese manufacturers do.  And it seems they can't make as good of an EV (excluding Tesla) because they have dragged their feet in developing their own EV technology.

 

But as low cost and quality EVs continue to be sold in huge numbers outside the U.S., many in U.S. population will eventually wonder why can't they buy one of those low cost and quality EVs which is replacing legacy ICEV just like the ICEV replaced horses & buggies.   

 

Transition to a new technology can be painful to many.....just like how online stores (i.e, Lazada, Shoppee, Amazon, etc) have put a lot of Mom & Pop brick-and-mortar stores out of business because Mom & Pop didn't (or couldn't) adapt new sales technology.   But with each Mom & Pop store that went out of business an equal or more number of online stores came into existence to create jobs, tax revenue, etc.   

 

Yeap, transition from old to new can indeed be painful to include lots of resistance and propaganda during the transition.

The real question is  - how long will it take for BYD to bring in the 3.0 Evo version? and how much will they push prices up once that hits the show rooms........ I am tempted for this discount, but the version they sell is giving me pause.

I see what you are saying, look at Seal, as soon as it gets close to Seal 2025 the 23/24 models prices plummet, same could happen with Sealion 7.

 

I feel like we have gotten past availability and are now into disposability !!

It’s amazing how fast the EV invasion is moving at now .

Just on your post below KhunLA, it seems that the pictures of every crashed Tesla I’ve seen, the vehicle is unrecognizable such is the damage.

As I think I’ve mentioned I recently went for a spin with my son in his Tesla in Brizvegas, Australia and the acceleration was breathtaking but how many drivers have the skill to handle that amount of power ?

Its fine for ev’s to have and promote such power but should they ?
