Yea.. I was hoping that would be my problem but I tried 3 different quality cards that worked flawlessly in my smartphones...and one card, a Sandisk Ultra card, was "brand new" bought from the SanDisk Official Online store.

I wish I had tried only installing the camera and tried using the original factory box which does "not" have a microSD slot...see if just using a USB thumb drive in a USB port would have worked/worked better. But for whatever reason I didn't give that a try.

Right now my brain can't get out of the rabbit hole that the dashcam USB box with memory slot was defective. Or, maybe it was a defective camera. Or, maybe the camera/USB box is not fully compatible with the SL7 latest OTA.

I hope you guys are using High/Max Endurance SD cards, not the normal "high quality" cards like Sandisk Ultra.

if you use standard SD card, even thou they are very fast, U3, top card, it will fail in a few months, or weeks. They are not intended for continuous writing.

There are many types of SD cards, but the most popular are

Standard (TLC / QLC): Very fast for read, ideal for Phones, DSLR cameras, or devices that you write little but read a lot.

High & Max Endurance: for CCTV or continuous writing usage, often use MLC or heavy 3D TLC pSLC for the chips.

The problem is that prices are crazy lately because of memory Chip shortage, every memory chip is now going to AI packages or to EV controller boards in China.

A 64GB High Endurance are going for 1200 baht, a month ago it was 1500 baht, so prices might be going down.

It was just 400-500 baht 2 years ago. luckily I got many 64GB high endurance cards before for stock :)

If you used an old or already heavily written card used on another Dashcam before, what could have been the cause of your new camera going dark or shutdown might have been one of these, very likely: (all 3 points were taken from Gemini, but verify on your own)

1. High Write Amplification Factor (WAF) & Abrupt Power Loss: Dash cams continuously record small-block metadata and video index tables (FAT32/exFAT allocation table updates). Consumer card controllers lack firmware optimization for continuous streaming writes. Combined with sudden power cutoffs when turning off the ignition, the controller can suffer metadata corruption, forcing the card into permanent read-only lock regardless of remaining cell lifespan. 2. Hot-Parked Thermal Stress & Charge Leakage: Even if the car is only driven 30 minutes a day, if it sits parked in direct sun or high ambient heat, where regularly reach 60°C to 80°C, a standard TLC/QLC floating-gate NAND will suffer accelerated data retention loss (charge leakage) at elevated temperatures when left un-powered. 3. Unannounced Controller Lock: Consumer cards do not feature health-monitoring flags that communicate write-errors back to the camera. When a block fails, the card silently drops frames or corrupts the recording loop without triggering an error on the dash cam screen. (Gemini)

I have at least 50-60 High endurance deployed between all CCTVs and all the cars we have. They all last years and never failed me.

I learned the leason many years ago, that the normal cards would fail after weeks or few months.

That AI response sounds like an advertisement to only buy the most expensive microSD cards. I have SanDisk Ultra cards in 5 different CCTV cameras around the outside of my house where each card has been doing many, many short recordings of objects/human/animal movements per 24 hours for several years now. Also have a SanDisk Ultra in my Atto 3 dashcam system which has been recording for almost three years now. Not one problem with aforementioned cards.

Update: This evening I finished the debate with myself and ordered an identical camera/USB box from a Lazada vendor. I could have bought off Shopee again but if this incoming Lazada dashcam order ends up having the same operational problem at least I will not be hitting Shopee with another refund request....will be hitting Lazada instead.

After looking thru Shopee and Lazada for hours (and even AliExpress) the only dashcam I found that is supposedly a "form, fit, and function" dashcam (i.e., identical to the OEM dashcam if BYD even equips any Sealion 7's with a dashcam at the factory) it turns out all vendors are selling the "exact same after-market SL7 dashcam"...probably because there is only one that is supposedly a form, fit, function dashcam for the Sealion 7. And some vendors include a SD card for a few extra baht...surely a no-name, cheap memory card.....but most of the vendors sell the dashcam without any memory card...you supply your own.

So, time will tell....it will take at least 2 to 3 days to receive the Lazada order. At least installing the camera and USB box will only take around 15 minutes since I've now got good at it. 😄😁

A while back you posted the USB ports in your Atto 3 stopped working and you were still checking into the problem. What did you figure out?.....and if the USB ports did break did BYD replace/repair for free under warranty? Thanks.
