Husband, 78, murders wife, 73; she mocked him at breakfast, he'd warned her about a lack of "Thainess"

INN reported that a 78 year old man called Somporn murdered his 73 year old wife Juan at their roadside bungalow in Ban Phrao sub-district of Phatthalung in southern Thailand.

 

Pa Phayom police found Juan face down in a pool of blood in an outside seating area. She had been attacked with what Thais called a "meet phra" a kind of short hand held curved knife. 

 

Somporn surrendered to their custody. 

 

After the couple's children left to live in other provinces Somporn cared for his wife who was ill.

 

But she frequently mocked the man who made each and every meal for her.

He said he had warned her about doing this over meals - something that older Thai people regard as a lack of "Thainess" 

 

However, at breakfast yesterday she was complaining again and belittling her husband, he said.

 

So he grabbed the knife and attacked her. 

 

Then he gave her breakfast to the chickens, washed off his bloodstains, cleaned the knife and prepared to surrender to the police.

out of my Wifes  family of 10 kids, 3  are  decent the rest lazy scroungers, her one sister who works  real  hard once told her lazy  husband she would  leave  him, his  repsonse , if she leaves  he would  kill  her.............its  not  uncommon I d  say both mid 50's

Certainly seems like a common attitude.  Women are seen as the property of men, while men are free to cheat and live off the woman.  Obviously the only way this works is if the woman is unable to leave.  Even if the relationship ends and the guy finds a new woman, apparently he can still go crazy and kill his ex if he is not happy that she has also moved on.  I think the only exception is if the woman has a child that the man does not want to support, then he disappears.

Possibly, but it sounds like a physical disability from the article.

 

I know some degenerative brain disorders can result in the person failing to recognise people, experiencing personality change and getting angry with them intermittently, but I'm not sure about ridiculing their cooking every mealtime.

 

Is there a mental disorder that causes you to mock your spouses cooking and means you cannot make your own meals?  (I worry that, if there is, it may be endemic amongst the forum members.)

Could have given the breakfast to the chickens and told her to go make her own breakfast if it was below par... 
But I guess that didn't cross his mind.

Incomplete reporting. Last night on the tv news when he was being interviewed by the police ( thai wife translated the interview for me ) he said that she dared him to kill her after he had told her to stop ridiculing him, so he did.

We hear and read many cases of relationships ending this way.

 

Headlines and stories are frequently reported as if the main reason was a bit of jealousy or for B200 or somebody was insulted or offended or lost face etc

 

But most failing or failed relationships occur because of underlying problems that have festered for some time.

 

But one day there is a tipping point - often something trivial and not worth anything in itself, but that does trigger an impulsive reaction that in reality could easily be a manifestation of that underlying problem that has a history and a build-up of tension, anger and frustration.

 

I cannot however justify killing someone, especially as I also believe that in relationships, both parties are likely to be contributing to their problem to lesser or greater degree.

Childhood friend's wife had a stroke so beside phisiclly having trouble walking  (mostly using a wheel chair) her brain was affected as well.  She will make coments to him/people with no regard for others feelings . He niece will no longer come over as she will just blurt out you know your fat/ugly ect. Took her on a cruise to Aruba  a week ago and when he tried taking photos she gave him the finger (he sent me the photo)  so a stroke could affect a persons body and mind.

My grandmother did this to her daughter's husband, whom she was living with in her very old age.  She needed complete nursing care from them.

Went to visit once, and it was just hard on the ears.

Well, at least he was considerate enough to warn her. We all have a breaking point. I honestly do not get why anyone stays with such a witch, year after year. Imagine being with someone who just never stops nagging, belittling you, and never shows gratitude for the care you are providing? 

 

Granted, murder is an extreme solution to his problem. Divorce or separation would have been better, even if she could not care for herself. Is he a husband, or a martyr?

Terrible supposition on your part (4myEgo) you cannot know about this guy, he cared for her needs but his final reaction was very wrong. Better to express empathy for both.

Utterly intolerable. Life is far too short to deal with someone like that. I would have warned my wife to straighten out her mom. If she could not, time to move on. From both of them. Let the ex deal with the sour puss.

I forgot where I was for a minute, that's right in Thailand women have protection against their aggressive partners/husbands.

 

I hear rumours that the police are always coming to the rescue not, when the call is made, of course they might turn up when someone's dead, a little late wouldn't you think.

 

They have busier things to attend to, like road closures to collect cash for expired registration, drivers licenses, and then they have the Karaoke bars to run, but that's another story.

My lazy aunt used to nag her husband, my uncle, even though he did the house cleaning,

the laundry, and cooking. He finally moved out and lived by him self. This Thai fellow

could have maybe done that as well, better than spending years in jail for murder.
