Highway police get award for work on road accidents - but reality of carnage on Thai roads continues

The chief of the Highway police was basking in the praise after receiving the top prize at a Thailand Road Safety seminar.

 

It was for road safety research, reported Siam Rath. 

 

But as always there were plenty of fatal accidents on the deadly Thai roads with Thai Rath showing an inverted Camry in Chonburi today.

 

The country remains in the top ten in the world according to reports this week, an unwanted accolade that PM Prayuth Chan-ocha is keen to reverse, notes ASEAN NOW.

Highways chief Ekkarat Limsangkat said that law enforcement on the Thai roads was resulting in a reduction of accidents and ever improving safety.

 

ASEAN NOW notes that Ekkarat headed a commission that looked into the problems of safety on the roads and made recommendations as to how this might be improved and how changes in the law might be implemented and assist in this regard.

Now his focus was particularly on taking action against persistent road traffic violators who refuse to pay fines.

 

Sometime ignoring up to 70 tickets, suggested Siam Rath.

 

He intended to weed out these individuals for the benefit of all good drivers on the roads.

He cited the situation in Chiang Rai province in the north of Thailand where there were 1,237 people who had ten tickets or more. 

 

He said this was good because there were 1.3 million people in the province and things were actually improving.

He stated that the police care about road safety and enforcement.

 

This came as Thai PM Prayuth instigated the latest moves to improve road safety over the next five years in particular so that by mid century Thailand could hold its head up with the best nations on earth in this regard, notes ASEAN NOW.

 

But the present reality on the roads came in the form of a Thai Rath picture, showing that much still needed to be done.

 

This was an upside down Toyota Camry that had hit a lamppost in Muang Chonburi.

 

Driver Peerapong had been given CPR at the scene but died from his injuries around 12.30 am this morning.

I bet the majority of those tickets were issued by cameras ,

not police doing their job.

Whenever a VIP is in the area, passing by in a motorcade,

there is a policeman on every corner, junction (several)

the smallest soi .but where do they all go to after ,very

rarely see them out and about.

Award for Road Safety research?  Wow, that is really impressive.  I feel so much safer driving now that Thailand's roads are well researched.  Meanwhile numbers of road accidents and deaths continue unabated.  Fluff news to distract the public, faking the Gov't actually accomplishing something.

There can not be another nation on earth where the top man gets an award for allowing absolute disregard to road safety and next to zero law enforcement by his own teams resulting in 10's of 1000s of unnecessary deaths.

I'm always for maximum possible individual freedom, but driving a car is where the fun stops. No car and/or motorcycle license without at least 20 hours driving lessons with a driving instructor. Many drivers here do not even know the simplest traffic rules.

Yes, really really grinds my gears these pricks that sit in the RH lane on the 7 motorway doing 100KM/H and refuse to move over for vehicles that have a desire to actually do the speed limit.

So true. If they would drive at least 100 Km/h then. On the highways, it's mostly the totally overloaded pickup trucks that permanently block the right lane. Or the regional farmers with their ancient cars that are incapable of driving  which, at 70 km/h, sometimes put themselves in the fast lane kilometers before the planned U-turn. The whole thing then at night without rear light illumination.

When most of the people drive with the attitude the road is mine and I will drive the way I want. Change will be a long time coming.

So the PM want's to reduce highway deaths because it makes him look bad? I guess that's progress but he will need police that actually do their jobs and enforce road safety. The children in charge can deliver all the prizes they want but little will change on the highways.

Until they loose that must be first all the time or I loose face attitude things will only get worse each year.

Also you better be a very defensive driver, especially at roundabouts. People here think they have the right away no matter what, because they don't know the rules/laws of the road. I tell my Thai wife they just don't care about anyone else but themselves and are privileged individuals.
