Usually they're a bunch of overly officious sods at check-in at Auckland Airport. Maybe the pandemic has chilled them a bit.

Answered your own question… Peace of mind, and it’s just a few bucks. There was every chance you could’ve been asked if you didn’t have a visa.

I entered last week on a visa exempt without a onward flight ,nor was I asked anything about such ,or proof of funds / address etc

The onward flight is not for immigration upon arrival.

It can be required by airline at departure to issue boarding pass.

Was not asked for from the airline that you flew with.
