large Monitor Connected To Laptop.

Hi.

I connect my Lenovo laptop to a monitor.

I just bought a LG Wide-screen monitor. 2560x1080.

When connected it says to change my PC setting to 2560x1080.

 

My laptop only goes to 1920x1080.

 

Is this normal for laptops?

Would it make a big difference to my viewing?

I wouldn't recommend connecting a large monitor to a laptop.

The setting in your computer should match the pixels of the monitor.

If your monitor has 2560 horizontal pixels and your notebook can only provide 1920 then you will have a bad picture!

Because the monitor tries to show 1920/2560 = 0.75 signals for one pixel. That can't be perfect!

On some monitors you have maybe a setting that the monitor shows only 1920 of those 2560 pixels. Some of the screen will be dark. But the picture quality will be better.

 

If you watch movies (or anything moving) then the mismatch is not such a big problem. If you do i.e. CAD work or text that is not so great.

In this mode it is indeed not be possible to switch to more than 1920*1080 ("Full HD") as this is the resolution (in pixels) of your laptop display (completely "normal").

Do you use Microsoft Windows?

And aren't there settings for dual display operation?

You should be able to only use the widescreen display when connected and set to 2560*1080. I would be surprised if the graphic card can't handle that.

What exact model is that laptop/notebook?

 

Unfortunately I can not test because my notebook and (old) TV are Full HD only (identical resolution).

I normally have only the TV display active. Notebook dark.

I am sitting at my PC.

Right click on the desktop, select "Display settings" and see if it allows each display to be individually configured.

 

My laptop display is set at 1920 x 1080 pixels (I've hidden some of the other options to keep it smaller)...

 

... but my external monitor, connected by HDMI, is set to 2560 x 1440 pixels - my graphics card can handle this without any degradation to the display.

 

Check if you get similar options.

Got only the monitor open.

Display resolution is grayed out. Cannot change it.

I was not clicking on the monitor graphic. That is why I could not change it. ????
