Sanook Thai Caption: One million baht bail each

Sanook reported that the two men at the center of an alleged extortion racket have both been granted bail in the sum of one million baht each.

They are a tourist policeman called Sen Sgt Maj Phuwamet and a man called Manas.

They were arrested last week in a sting opposite Central Westgate in Bang Yai.

They are allegedly involved in extorting money from pubs and clubs in exchange for protection.

The policeman has already been temporarily suspended from duty by tourist police chief Pol Lt-Gen Sukhun Phromayon.

On Friday night the wife of the policeman at the center of the allegations and relatives of Manas arrived with 1 million baht each to get bail that was granted by the Bang Yai police.

The relatives actively tried and succeeded in preventing reporters getting to the two men and raced off at speed into the night.

From an earlier report:

"Relatives of the tourist policeman turned up with 200,000 baht money to bail him out but this was denied."

Looks like the earlier offered bail amount of 200,000 wasn't enough for Bang Yai police, so it had to be "re-negotiated" to a cool million per suspect. As always, money talks.

I wonder how much of these 2 million will actually go into state coffers.

What does "bent" mean when used in this context: "bent tourist cop"

Is it a mistranslation of "crooked"? And what is a "tourist cop"?

I doubt it.  More likely they will lay low for a bit at the old family farm in Nahkon Nowhere, then start having quiet meetings with witnesses who will be encouraged with a variety of inducements to suddenly suffer from substantial memory loss.

Bent cops paying bail to other bent cops. Nothing new here.

wonder who gets to keep the bail money once they flee?

I'm aware of at least one other ongoing case with bent tourist police in Hua Hin,...but it hasn't made the newspapers yet ! It most probably involves some higher very powerful famous person,.....I can't talk about it but get new details almost on a daily basis. Can't wait until the newspapers get hold of this story.

No, its not a mistranslation of crooked, it is a synonym.

The meare fact that they can stump up a million each adds some fuel to the fire.

Perhaps they had paper rounds to supplement their wages.

It is a possibility that the complainants will now be shot or withdraw their complaint due to pressure from the policeman or his colleagues

Now there is some food for thought.

Probably onto something here.

Nahkon Nowhere is a wonderful place to be.

No way, they obviously forgot to pass the money up the chain....hung out to dry.

The average copper salary is some THB 20 k.

They must have a good saving AC.

Does Thailand have anything like the magistrate system for arraignments and bail setting?

The wife could bring 2 million at the drop of a hat?!!????

I wonder which country they are enjoying their money?

Must have accumulated a nice pot of savings to cover that bail?

The stench of corruption can be sensed from here.

Police granting bail, 200k upped to 1M and no doubt the inevitable misunderstanding, followed by a wai will resolve the issue.

It is certainly an easier life  to be a rich crook here in Thailand than a poor one!
