Half of GOP Voters Ready to Leave Trump Behind, Poll Find

As Donald Trump weighs whether to open an unusually early White House campaign, a New York Times/Siena College poll shows that his post-presidential quest to consolidate his support within the Republican Party has instead left him weakened, with nearly half the party’s primary voters seeking someone different for president in 2024 and a significant number vowing to abandon him if he wins the nomination.

By focusing on political payback inside his party instead of tending to wounds opened by his alarming attempts to cling to power after his 2020 defeat, Trump appears to have only deepened fault lines among Republicans during his yearlong revenge tour. A clear majority of primary voters younger than 35, 64%, as well as 65% of those with at least a college degree — a leading indicator of political preferences inside the donor class — told pollsters they would vote against Trump in a presidential primary.

Trump’s conduct on Jan. 6, 2021, appears to have contributed to the decline in his standing, including among a small but important segment of Republicans who could form the base of his opposition in a potential primary contest.

- poll finds.

In 2022, even the sheep know these "polls" are soo worthless.   This literally has as much credibility as :

- Big Foot declares

- Swamp Man says

No major poll has ever had a error greater than 5% outside their margin of error.

Trump advisers pressing him to announce 2024 campaign before Lindsey Graham meets with grand jury

The special grand jury empaneled in Fulton County issued a subpoena to the South Carolina Republican to testify about Trump's efforts to overturn his election loss in the state, and the former president's advisers seem to think he should announce another White House bid to stay ahead of that investigation, reported New York Magazine.

“A lot of people are saying, ‘You’ve got to announce so you’re protected. It’s a witch hunt, they’re trying to do this to you again.

"That is what the Republicans are saying in Washington. They are scared to death that Donald Trump is going to declare before November. because it absolutely changes the conversation for them. This is a very effective political environment for them right now, where they can have a wave again because it's just not been such a great year for President Biden, whether it is his fault or not."

Well, if he isn't imprisoned or otherwise legally barred from holding any office including dog catcher (yes, that is possible) then he almost definitely will run and will probably be nominated as well. One one one against Gay Panic Florida Guy and Florida Guy wins. But there will likely be multiple challengers like before, so Mr. trump can get nominated with 30 or 40 percent support. Ironically (and dangerously) it would be much easier for the democrats to beat Mr. trump than Florida Guy, etc.

Another twist is if Florida Guy loses his governor's contest to the excellent candidate Charlie Crist. What does that mean? I don't know. But will the republicans nominate Florida Guy that can't even win in Florida?

a supposed Churchill remark: “Americans can always be trusted to do the right thing, once all other possibilities have been exhausted.”

I suspect that we have a long way to go until all the other possibilities are exhausted.

I also suspect that

Republican/Trumpian control of Congress and the White House will result in various "electoral reform measures" which will cement that control they are already working hard towards that goal.

I doubt whether the Supreme Court will take an interest.

I'm afraid I see a rather dark future for democracy in the USA.

I should imagine that two more years of " a protected status as a presidential candidate would appeal.

The expanded use of drop boxes for mailed ballots during the 2020 election did not lead to any widespread problems, according to an Associated Press survey of state election officials across the U.S. that revealed no cases of fraud, vandalism or theft that could have affected the results.

The findings from both Republican- and Democratic-controlled states run contrary to claims made by former President Donald Trump and his allies who have intensely criticized their use and falsely claimed they were a target for fraud.

Yet conspiracy theories and efforts by Republicans to eliminate or restrict them since the 2020 election persist.

No.

Being a candidate for president offers no legal protection from indictments whatsoever.

Yes but, in his mind (and that of many of his supporters) he will see it as a platform from which to bellow about his opponents trying to use the law to derail his campaign. The louder he shouts the more he believes himself.

It will also inevitably be used as leverage to extract more money from his supporters.. He couldn't resist the money!

The REAL reason Trump will run. It's not to save America. Its to save his own ass.

There's also his gargantuan ego and the fact that staying in the public eye greatly expands his ability to fleece gullible supporters out of their money.
