Yeah, I can recommend that you take care of the child you plan to adopt. Otherwise, you can just give a sum of money and not give one child in an orphanage an unfair advantage. All children in such place have the same needs. 10

Are you talking about sponsoring or adopting? Cause your sentence is confusing. If you adopt a child, the kid is yours. Wrwest
Cut the OP some slack. Yes, you are correct in the legal status of sponsor versus adoption. But then some of us grew up when the term “adopt” was used synonymously. I recall programs for “adopting” animals and children. What it was in reality is sponsoring.
Photoguy21
If the child is not living with you, you are basically sponsoring NOT adopting them. Big difference.

Agreed... from his explanation its pretty obvious what the Op wants to do and we don’t need to get hung-up over the words used; adopted vs sponsoring and distract the thread from the fact that the Op wants to do a good thing. Now... my ‘guess’ is, that if the Op wants to support an individual child who is living within an Orphanage he may find that difficult (just a guess) as all children there are living under the same roof, have the same needs etc... My Guess is that the Op has decided he wants to make a ‘real difference’ in an individuals life rather than make an imperceptible difference in a lot of children's lives.... I understand that, but also it seems a little wrong unless actually going the full on ‘live in adoption route’... Thus: The best the Op could do is to sponsor the Orphanage itself (again, just a guess). 4
ChrisKC
In any event, Adoption is a legal process and responsibility of care, provision and protection then passes to the new parents.

Postmaster
I know examples where sponsorship appears to be working ok at BaanJing Jai Childrens' Orphanage, East Pattaya, Banglamung. The point which has been made about one particular kid gaining special benefits above all others in an institution is very valid.
jak2002003
I would not trust most of the Christian so called 'orphanages'. Most are basically money making businesses using children as a commodity..to bring in more money so the owners can buy more cars and have a nice house....and also brainwash the kids to give up their traditional beliefs and customs and become Christians....also there is a lot of abuse goes on in many. Rather than give the place money you can donate clothes, equipment and food. Or help out there and check all is ok with the place before you give any money. If the place does not want that then they can't be trusted.
unblocktheplanet
Mercy Foundation, founded by Father Joe Maier in Klong Toey, has been a solid resource for decades. Their orphanage deserves your support. They have mine. (And I'm not Catholic, nor is religion imposed on the kids.)
