Is anti-virus software needed with Linux.

Yes.

Ransomware is bad news.

I was hit with ransomware on a Linux distro.

Wiped out or locked many files.

I had backups.

 

This is one reason I am using Windows.

I just find it easier relying on Windows to update security software.

I do not fear virus with Linux.

But, ransomware is something else.

  • first you need to understand what "antivirus" and "firewall" are and what they are used for, then you need to realize that it's not 2007 anymore and the modern malware does not spread like back then.

  • I've mistaken it with some other malware, "hand of thief" is just the first name that I've recalled. Still there is plenty of userland malware that does not require root privileges.  

I have been using Linux for the nearly 20 years. Never installed any virus scanner. I have used different distros but now I have been using Fedora for the last 10 years. 

 

If you install your software from the repositories you shouldn't have any issues. And never give root permission to any software you download and install from other websites.
