BANGKOK, Aug 15 (TNA) – Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn expressed his support for a project to build a bridge to Koh Samui island, Surat Thani, to promote tourism.

He expressed his stance while attending a meeting with representatives of public and private sectors on Koh Samui and in Surat Thani province. Apart from the bridge project, the meeting also discussed local tourism development projects including an initiative to turn Koh Samui into a wellness and green destination.

The Transport Ministry already studied the feasibility of a new bridge to Koh Samui from either Don Sak district of Surat Thani or Khanom district of Nakhon Si Thammarat province and the ministry found feasibility with the project.

I sincerely hope the minister also support major improvements of infrastructure on the island before building a bridge, otherwise the island's environment might collapse from all the extra tourists, who furthermore might be disappointed when arriving to a place that cannot cope with their basic recreational demands....:whistling:

This bridge will not be built in our or our children's lifetime. Just another pipe-dream idea from the people who work in the "hub" of pipe dreams.

That would make to much sense so will not happen....

Longest bridge in Europe connects Malmö in Sweden with Copenhagen in Denmark.

Cost 130 billion baht 22 years ago and took 5 years to build.

Total total length is 16km.

An estimated population in the region is 4.1 million people

The closest distance between Samui and the mainland is 18km.

Terrible  idea. It was the airport  that led to the decline of quality tourists and the overwhelming  of the environment

No decline of quality tourists on Samui - plenty of Indians checking into the villas up here. ????

No decline of quality tourists on Samui

Absolutely correct, Samui has never had quality tourists, so a decline cannot happen.

Now, if only Samui can rid itself of the Farang owned rip-off resorts. ????
