The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) on Wednesday, August 17th, reported that the total number of foreign tourists arriving in Thailand has reached four million since the full country reopening on January 1st.

TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn told the press that after the government had relaxed its measures and registrations for foreign tourists in January, it was reported that a total of 4,015,504 tourists had visited the country from January 1st to August 16th, reflecting a gradual improvement in the tourism industry.

“TAT expected that as of August 31st, the number of foreign tourists would reach 4.5 million people and about 40,000+ people would arrive in the country per day,” the governor added.

4 million by August would be pathetic by normal standards, pre pandemic being 3 million plus a month, but you have to remember that an arrival is counted as one every time, even if that person has been in and out four times this year, so its probably way lower in numbers of actual new people. Even that setting the records straight, does show a glimpse of sunlight on the horizon, given it was zero for a very long time. For Thai people who have lost so much these past years, I genuinely hope numbers and dollars to come back to them, and that they remember who did what for them in their hour of need while their government did little.

Foreign Tourist Numbers On The Rise
By Editor

Thailand welcomed more than four million foreign tourists from January 1 to August 16, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reported on Wednesday.

TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said 4,015,504 foreign tourists visited the country in the seven-and-a-half-month period, while the first half of August saw an average of 42,000 international arrivals per day.

He said the tourism sector has recovered to a great extent after the government eased several Covid-19 prevention measures, including removing the Thailand Pass entry system from July 1.

TAT expects the number of foreign tourists to reach 4.5 million on August 31, Yuthasak said.  It aims to attract an overall 10 million tourists this year, with more than 1 million per month in August and September and 1.5 million per month in the fourth quarter.

Yuthasak expects foreign tourists to generate 625.8 billion baht in revenue for the country this year, while another 656 billion baht is likely to come from 160 million domestic trips by Thai travellers.

The top five countries from which the most tourists arrived from January 1 to August 16 were:

Malaysia – 526,051

India – 395,025

Laos – 218,043

Singapore – 213,523

UK -193,003

Yes I’ve been in and out three times already since April and I’m not a tourist so it should be 3 million 999997

So, nearly a quarter of Thailand's tourism figures appear to be migrant workers - shows the real figures for 'actual' tourism' are REALLY REALLY bad !

80% of them are from India swarming all over Pattaya  behaving like they never been outside of India... i just came back from there and our big 4 stars hotel was/is full of them...

Overheard this on the golf course the other day. Sorry khun <name> i need to find a job for my son. Now he is only partying doing alcohol and drugs. Something might happen that forces him to spend the next 20 years abroad. A job that pays well but not too much work. He is not really into that. 555 I know what you mean. I got two sons myself. Well we can give him a senior position with TAT. No real work involved. Every year a few promotional activities abroad. Of course 5 star hotels and business class tickets all paid for. Sound good. And his salary? He gets 500 Baht per tourist arrival. Okay how many arrivals can he expect? Well we normally also count all the migrant workers, Malay weekend massage tourists, digital nomads, expats and Thai double passport holders etc as tourist arrivals. I understand. And who is doing the counting. He is. Sounds good. Let's do it.

If you are not here on a tourist visa probably not, so no.

If the numbers in the article is true it only adds up to 2 million for the top 5 countries, so the other 2.5 million came from

many many other countries?  I would believe TAT if they actually showed the countries and numbers

that did add up to the 4.5 million.  The fantasy team for sure. Tis is Thailand.

That would be 4,015,504, who actually stepped onto Thai soil.

Of those there will be a number of people who are in Transit and on a single night stopover, Fi-Fo,s who are resuming their normal activity, and returning Expats

Vacationers ? Maybe half the total.

I'm curious as to the average spend per head of the  218,000 Laotian "tourists"

Yes, I very much doubt that 1 out of 33 Laotians (218,000 vs. 7.27 million) travelled to Thailand this year for pleasure. I've been told that Laotians are struggling, due to low wages, their currency's devaluation, not to mention the general inflation.

I wonder how many expats are hidden in the UK number of 193,003 ,

and how many trips in (and out) this year?

4 million entries... a mix of tourists, expats, business people and connecting travelers?

4 mill ... hmm

Kind of impressive and more than I would have thought, no matter who or what the reason coming/going.

If they are on retirement visas /or working, then none as they wouldnt be tourists.

Do you really think authorities make the effort to deduct those from the total number of arrivals?

Earlier this year the forecast was 15 million tourists for 2022, then 12 million, now 6 or 7 million.

Thailand and several ASEAN neighbours are now paying the price for the ever-changing requirements and endless hoops to jump through, while many Euro countries are almost back to pre-pandemic levels.

Takes a long time to get a customer but just one false move to lose him.

Not 80%, but pretty much the same here in Phuket. 99k Indians vs next group down 41k Aussies arrivals reports by the island immigration.
