Officials from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) have seized about 360,000 pirated brand name items, worth about 120 million baht, in recent raids in Bangkok and Nakhon Nayok.

A representative for the brands involved, which are mostly on jeans and handbags, told the media that the seizure was one of the largest by the DSI in recent years.

According to DSI Deputy Director-General Pol Lt-Col Phayao Thongsen, about 300,000 items, worth about 100 million baht, were seized from two major markets in Nakhon Nayok province and about 60,000 pairs of jeans were seized from a warehouse in Bangkok’s Bang Bon district.

When these raids happen everyone who can shuts the shop up and runs.  I've been caught in a few 'false alarms.'  In other countries in the area too.

Next day all will be open again, minus the one, or few, shuttered with a police notice on the door.  Software, music CDs, you name it.

A representative for the brands involved,

Made in the same factories as the "fake" ones but with a huge markup applied to them.????

Is DSI raiding motorbike shops selling Akrapovic mufflers? No. Why not? Because hi-so people don't buy or sell them.

Will they use the steam roller again or destroy them some other way?

Or the skeptic in me says they'll find their way back into the market?

Thailand is the hub of fake high end purses and clothes.  Watched last night as a lady walked into one of the high end stores at Icon Siam with a fake handbag, the sales people had her exit the store......

If not manufactured inside Thailand I wonder how all these "fake" items manage to evade customs?

They need to be more specific. Are they Original Copies or Fake Copies?

Exactly, that is the question. Were they sold (priced) as 'knock-off' which I understand to be OK. Counterfeit goods sold as the genuine item are, of course, illegal.

Fakes & copies were always enjoyed by tourists to Thailand and indeed copies were a tourist attraction plus wealthy folks will pay the high prices for say a Louis Vuitton handbag or £60 sports shirt which are out of the price range for most tourists . I once bought an England football shirt at a Thai market . Quite funny really cos on the small hologram it read Endland instead of England but the rest of it was good . Have also bought many golf shirt copies which were good quality and lasted  many years .
