Opinion – Gen. Prayut’s promise of ‘reform’ fall flat on its face with revelation of promotion in armed forces

Thailand’s media has been gung-ho about the ongoing case of a female police corporal who claimed to be the wife of a senator and managed to break every possible rule she could by just using the senator’s name.

 

The case against a female police corporal, who has been accused of torturing a female soldier who served as her maid, is another example of how corrupt the Thai police’s and military’s promotion systems are.

 

It is a common knowledge that a police officer or a soldier will be able to climb the ranks and file at a much faster pace than others if they know someone in power.

There is no doubt that the corruption with the promotion system of the police and the military will continue until there is a real reform of the Thai police and the military.

 

I think the above statement covers it all - No surprises unfortunately.

 

If I remembered correctly, the promise to get rid of corruption at all levels was one of General Prayut Chan-o-cha’s excuses for the 2014 coup and the fact of the matter is, he was in charge of the police and the military while all of this was happening.

 

Once again I think I can safely say No surprises .......????????

There is no saying the extent of the corruption in this administration, but the army is not exactly known for integrity.

Corruption in the military is likely endemic...and often renders an army poorly situated in a conflict. Russian military today is an example of high levels of corruption.

That country has untold thousands (?) of ghost soldiers...all drawing salaries for their leaders...does Thailand have the same issues?

Gung-ho means to be over the top enthusiastic.  It's generally used as a negative.  It can imply that due care is not being taken as a result.

Is this really only reserved for those two sectors?  I'm pretty sure money and family connections play a part in most jobs in Thailand.

They should have the R stripped from their title as their corrupt practices are a national disgrace.

I was told yonks ago that police pay 1m baht to work in Pattaya, now why would that be ?

absolutely right. This is why Thailand will never progress due to the wrong people in power at all levels across all sectors. The system here is broken beyond repair.

Absolutely.
