Pattaya Hotel asking for deposit upon check-in

I've read elsewhere that some hotels are asking for a 1000 baht deposit upon checking-in, which I suppose is a damage deposit and cover for bar fridge purchases in your room .  I've never experienced this yet, but I haven't been back since pre-covid.  Is this practice customary now?

Funny, I've never experienced a hotel that doesn't take a deposit.

Are you visiting from another planet?

Would have asked the same.

1000 or 2000.

Absolutely common as long as I can remember.

Same with scooter rental.

For weekly promo price the full amount is due at check-in.

Maybe some hi class hotels being paid with credit card block a garantuee on your card and you will not even notice? Similar to car rental.

Pattaya 3 Star.

About 10 to 20 Baht above 7/11.

Couldn't care less.

But cheaper hotels now just offer a full size fridge without service.

Funny anecdote.

When I first time came here with a friend, he got tired of the ladies of the night, going in his mini bar first thing they arrived in the room.

So he had the solution.

Before he went out, he would empty the mini bar and put it all in his suitcase.

Only thing is, in the morning he forgot to put it back, so the hotel refilled and charged for the complete mini - bar.

Happened 3 times on his 16-day holiday ????

Penny wise Pound follish.

This is why you always swing by the sewen on the way home with tonight's girlfriend, and generously pay for whatever snacks or little sundries they grab.

I usually even get them a large bottle of their favourite beer, helps get the elusive female libido going!

Of course there are even better party helpers out there nowadays, but that's "up to you".

No need to empty the fridge, you're the boss! If she wants more, send her downstairs to get it herself!

Funny, I've never experienced a hotel that does take a deposit.

Btw, if people don't share your experiences, they must be from another planet?

I never encountered this until a couple of years ago , again in Pattaya . Small , newish hotel Central area , they asked for 500 upfront deposit . I thought it might be a scam so went elsewhere .

That's exactly what I was thinking.  But BMs like yourself have shared their experiences and confirmed it's all legit.  Cheers.
