Daily News Thai Caption: Lightning strike!

Daily News reported that fire services in the downtown Huay Khwang area were called after a car caught on fire in the parking lot of the HQ of the Government Housing Bank on Soi 7 of Rama 9 Road.

The blaze was brought under control within 15 minutes and there was no spread to other vehicles. By that time half the vehicle was burnt out.

People reported seeing the car struck by lightning before the fire started.

There had been consistent heavy rain the area before.

Ok.

the high current will tend to flow on the outside skin of the car along paths of lowest resistance after it connects to the upward reaching ground leader from the area near the top of the car.  Not always perfect though. Better than using your body by sitting outside the car though.

the high current will also arc across or heat to the point of autoignition at any high resistance points in the path. So starting a fire under the hood or where there are plastics is likely. Possibly a dead short of the starter battery.

Can car owners now order lightning strikes on demand?...

"People reported seeing the car struck by lightning before the fire started".

Well, well, in this land "people" are seeing so many things which are absolutely invisible anywhere else.

If lighting struck the car then it might be possible, that some nearby are definitely deaf; whoever witnessed a lighting stroke nearby will confirm that.

Furthermore - in most cases - hits the highest point first, i.e. a big tree on the country side or a lightning conductor rod on top of a building. but who am I to know; I was not in said parking lot of the bank when lightning stroke ???? and hence still hear and see everything clearly 8-)
