UK to propose asylum ban on English Channel migrants

BIRMINGHAM, England, Oct 4 (Reuters) - British interior minister Suella Braverman set out plans on Tuesday for new powers which would ban migrants who cross the English Channel from claiming asylum and said it was her "dream" to see a government flight deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda.

The government has been under pressure to deal with the rising number of people making dangerous journeys despite plans to deport those arriving illegally to Rwanda.

More than 30,000 people have made the crossing in small boats so far this year, already surpassing last year's record. Government officials have warned the total could reach 60,000 by the end of 2022.

Hardly a new policy initiative.

This govt is falling apart already, braverman can propose policy all she wants but can’t distract or deflect from the inner turmoil of truss’ cabinet.

Sounds like an eminently sensible policy. People trying to go from France to the UK are not in distress or danger. THey are already in a safe country, so there is no need to travel further to seek asylum. It is obvious that they are only seeking economic advantage.

Indeed... You can hardly blame the immigrants for not knowing that France has both a better economy and far more opportunities in general than the UK these days.

 

If the Truss somehow manages to finish the job she tried to start, then the immigration situation should pretty much resolve itself over time.

You do realize that the treaties on human rights are included as requirements within almost every other treaty the UK is signed up to?

 

The UK can’t just abandon its treaty obligations without serious consequences.

I doubt that any treaty says that they have to give asylum to people escaping  from France!
Mind you, they should be deported back to France, not Rwanda.

Some cannot get a visa for the UK due to not fitting the criteria and so just get a boat across .

   Some have spouses in the U.K who don't earn the declared required amount of income , and so just get a boat across

Not sure how it works. Escape from France illegally but get sent back formally/legally? If the return requires French permission what happens if it is not given? The French will just say they don't allow economic migrants and the British will tear their hair out. 

Obvious that the UK has a better reputation than France for hundreds of years, which is why no one wants to settle in France, with its difficult language and horrible food smothered in sauces. Can't blame the migrants for opting for the better choice.

French food is the best in the World....Anyway the French could easily prevent these boats from crossing with infrared drone patrols followed up by helicopters both funded by the UK, but it is obviously not in the French interest to do so.

Looks like even other tories are bemused by braverman’s rhetoric, especially as she now seems keen to sabotage the U.K.-India trade deal. 
 

“Braverman has already caused alarm in the government by saying on Tuesday she would aspire to cutting net migration to “tens of thousands” – a promise that previous Conservative governments have failed to keep.

 

One senior source said: “No one knows why she made those comments. That promise was used time and again to criticise Theresa May when she was home secretary.”

An excellent initiative.

 

Much as I would like to see this implemented overnight, I realise it could take some time. So in the meantime, I suggest they set up immigration detention centres to house these illegal economic migrants from France. I'd suggest making them similar in terms of style to the Thai immigration detention centres, only less luxurious. Then patrol the borders picking up the dinghy occupants and immediately take them to the detention centres to stay indefinitely. That should disincentivize the majority from coming to the land of handouts until the ban can be implemented.

 

We should also leave the ECHR. We should make our own standards on human rights and do not need Strasbourg to weaponize them against us as they did in the Rwanda debacle.
