Customs in Ranong Approve Fuel for PTTEP Support Vessel Amid Tightened Border Controls
Picture courtesy of Customs. The Customs Department in Ranong has authorised the export of fuel to be used exclusively by a support vessel for PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP), in accordance with Thailand’s current border and energy policies. The fuel will be used to support offshore oil drilling platforms in Myanmar, as part of PTTEP’s ongoing natural gas production efforts. This approval comes after the Thai government implemented strict measures, including suspending electricity supplies and fuel exports to Myanmar, aiming to pressure the Myanmar government to address issues such as call centre operations and human trafficking. In response to these policies, the Customs Department in Ranong had requested a temporary halt on fuel exports to Koh Sawang, Myanmar, to curb these concerns. However, this restriction does not extend to the support vessels working with PTTEP, which are allowed to transport fuel solely for use in gas extraction in Myanmar’s territorial waters. The fuel is intended to support natural gas production, which will ultimately be used to generate electricity in Thailand. The operation is closely monitored by several agencies, including the Royal Thai Navy, Ranong Customs, Ranong Provincial Commercial Office, and security personnel, to ensure compliance with both national policies and security measures. PTTEP is required to strictly control the shipment process to ensure that the fuel is not diverted for other uses or sold in Myanmar. The government’s approach aims to balance energy production with its commitment to addressing regional security and humanitarian issues. -- 2025-02-16 -

Lorry Overturns into Canal in Chaiyaphum , Driver Trapped in Wreckage
Picture from responders. An 18-wheel lorry carrying a full load of soil lost control and plunged into a canal near Chaiyaphum city, leaving the driver critically injured and trapped inside the wreckage. Rescue teams rushed to the scene and spent 40 minutes extracting the unconscious driver before transporting him to Chaiyaphum Hospital. At 10:30 on 14 February, Pol. Lt. Col. Jittipat Kamrangsri, an investigator at Mueang Chaiyaphum Police Station, received reports of a lorry crash at a flood drainage construction site near Modin Daeng, on the outskirts of Chaiyaphum city. Emergency responders from Sawang Kunatham Rescue Unit and an ambulance from Chaiyaphum Hospital were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officials found a white Hino 18-wheel lorry that had veered off the road and crashed into the canal, ending upside down and sustaining severe front-end damage. The driver, later identified as Mr. Namchok, 35, from Udon Thani, was trapped inside the wreckage, critically injured and struggling to breathe. According to Mr. Wiwat, a local resident who witnessed the crash while tending to his cattle, the lorry driver appeared to have swerved suddenly before veering off the road and into the canal. Large amounts of soil were scattered at the scene, suggesting that the driver may have attempted to avoid an obstacle before losing control. Authorities plan to question the driver once his condition stabilises to determine the exact cause of the crash. -- 2025-02-16 -

Chemical Leak at Samut Sakhon Cold Storage Facility Leaves Eight Unconscious
Picture from responders. A chemical leak at a cold storage facility in Samut Sakhon has left at least eight workers unconscious, while 24 others suffered symptoms such as dizziness and nausea. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported the affected workers to Samut Sakhon Hospital for treatment. At 20:20 on 14 February, reports emerged of a chemical leak at PC Tuna Siam Co., Ltd., located in Moo 4, Nadee Subdistrict, Mueang Samut Sakhon District. The leak involved carbon monoxide (CO), a chemical used in fish preservation, which escaped from a faulty valve in the company’s production line. The affected workers, mostly Myanmar nationals, unknowingly inhaled the gas while working, causing them to experience severe dizziness, nausea, and, in some cases, unconsciousness. Emergency teams quickly sealed the CO valve to stop the leak and evacuated the affected employees. Eight workers lost consciousness and were immediately taken to hospital, while 24 others reported mild symptoms and were monitored for further health complications. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the valve failure and assessing whether safety regulations were adequately followed. -- 2025-02-16 -
