APEC 22: Immigration announce results of crackdown on foreign illegals ahead of international meet

Thailand's Immigration Bureau - that last week along with tourist police mobilized 550 men - announced the result of a pre APEC 22 crackdown.

 

Results of the efforts on Thursday to Saturday last week were announced by IB chief Pol Lt-Gen Phakphoomphiphat Sajjaphan and other senior immigration police on Sunday.

 

A total of 785 foreigners on overstay were rounded up.

 

Some 1,249 people who illegally entered the kingdom were found.

Warnings and advice were issued to 2,723 foreigners about reporting their address in Bangkok.

 

587 people like landlords and owners of properties where migrants and foreigners stay were fined for not reporting under Article 38 of the IB code.

Thai Rath also reported further developments on the arrest of a Chinese national called Sao and his Thai driver Satawat, 36. He was driving his boss around as if he were a diplomat. 

 

Two Chinese nationals named only as Lee, 27, and Hoo, 40, were arrested on Interpol Red Notices. 

 

Jang, a Taiwanese was found using a Cambodian passport and following contact with the Taiwanese embassy he was found to be another person and was mixed up in call center fraud in the Philippines.

You can arrest foreign nationals on a Red Notice?.....That can't be correct.

Quite right too, after all it would be very bad for Thailand's image if, say, Xi Jinping popped out for a late night snack at a noodle vendor on Sukhumvit and was accosted by a drunken farang on overstay. And what if Justin Trudeau accidentally bumped into them while he was looking for some overnight company at Spanky's in Nana Plaza, why it could have the makings of a diplomatic incident!

Strange. This means the police could have caught illegal foreigners at any time (it seems so easy) but chose to wait until this conference to do so.

One important thing they did for the World Bank Conference some years ago was to round up all the lady boys who hang out in Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy and other red light districts and tell they would their asses in jail, if they dared come out during the conference.  One thing they were very scared of was that one of the delegates would be found with his throat slit by a ladyboy and his Rolex and gold necklace missing.  Nana without the ladyboy pick pockets and street walkers was bliss.  Pity they couldn't get rid of them permanently.

This has already been reported but it is still not clear what the difference is between just driving your boss around and driving him around like a diplomat. Does the latter mean bribing corrupt traffic cops to supply a police escort?

So we should suspend civil rights for all transgenders because some of them may have committed crimes in the past? Are there any other groups of people that you feel are not deserving of due process? I find reactionary bigots annoying but even they have rights.

My thoughts exactly.  Some random foreigners on overstay are no threat whatsoever to the security of the meeting or the general safe running of Thailand.

 

I imagine it has something to do with all the Thai criminals they rounded up.  They wanted to show that foreigners are criminals too.

Well done Thailand, once again you prove your xenophobic attitude to foreign nationals. Cracking down on foreign illegals ahead of an international event, why not do your job everyday. We all agree that foreigners who break laws should be punished accordingly. If the Immigration Police made more effort to chase these foreigners down as and when they do break laws then there wouldn't be a need for special crack downs before APEC conferences.

 

How about a crackdown on brown shirted RTP criminals, there are plenty to choose from, based on recent media reports. Then Thailand can show case to the world how corrupt the police force here is.

Right now, roaming around bbk, in the hot midday hours I'm regularly handed out fresh bottles. of water, and with a smile...by the police...and God knows how on overstay i am ! (but mentally only my lords..!). Thank you again APEC 22 !

Speak for yourself! I certainly don't agree with that. Many Thai laws are completely insane and others you are forced to break if you don't want to end up in even bigger trouble. Try refusing to pay a bribe because you want to follow the law and see what happens.
