mmasked and embarrassed

I was recently at an airport waiting for an arrival... the Thais there were all masked in the waiting area, only two French farang were not.

 

There was even an announcement about covid and staying masked. The farang who got off the plane, were 95% unmasked. The Thai were masked. 

 

I was embarrassed for the unmasked farang. Not masking in a public place when requested, is rude behavior. i don't like to wear a mask either, but for 30 minutes it was not a big deal and I was respecting others beliefs. 

 

This is not a post about the medical validity of masking, it is about respect and courtesy. If you are an atheist and sit down to dinner w/people who pray before dinner, you would sit quietly out of respect for their beliefs. This is even more egregious as people are concerned for their health whether needless or not.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Within the bounds of normal courtesy. It's not rocket science.

I was recently at BHP, got dropped off, forgot a mask, not a word said by anyone either at nurse desk or by doctor.

Before I would agree but for the majority of Thais the mask will live forever.

Why were you embarrased @1FinickyOne. Kind of sad for anyone to have an issue with folks who are not wearing a mask while others who choose to for there own reasons do wear a mask.  

 

Would you be embarrased for others who eat Durian while others hold there noses because of the smell...Not an issue. Those of us who wear masks do not do it for any reason other than we believe in the wearing of them under certain conditions.

Weird statement, do you feel all white folk are one people?

Can't say I pay much attention to what other people are doing, no matter what their racial background.

This is a poor analogy.

 

Yes, sitting quietly is fine out of respect for their beliefs. 

 

Expecting them to wear a mask is not sitting quietly. It's expecting the atheists to pray alongside them.

I don't think they were actually embarrassed.  I think that's just how they are reframing it for the sake of this post.

 

I have a suspicion that it was more like a feeling of part rage and part condescension.

Useless in what way? your view obviously. KN 95 masks still used for the bad air quality in BKK. While at the house in HH PKK we never wear one as the airs good. Now if in the city and around others, and until the air gets better we wear them. Personal decision and nothing more. You do as you wish, and we will as well.

The one thing that has severely suffered during pandemic, and has nearly evaporated by the time it was over, is empathy. People as a whole became self-centered, self-serving, the egos have grown out of proportions, everyone else is blamed for their own misery, all the kindness and care for others has mostly disappeared.

It's all about "me, me, MEEEEEEEE!" and it is evident not just in this mask or no mask topic, but in daily incidents the World over.

 

The posters here should remember something, however. You are guests in another country. Disrespecting the customs of your hosts. Do you think that makes them like you more, or despise you and only tolerate you as long as you're bringing in the money?

 

Or, do you think it's OK if others bring their bad habits to your countries? Many of those are considered crimes in the West, and some immigrants are hated for their behavior. That's just tables turned. If you want to do whatever you want to do with no respect for your hosts in Thailand, you should also allow that refugees and immigrants to do whatever they want to do in your own countries. Fair? Probably only until your daughter gets raped and killed. Like when some infected maskless farang coughs in the face of a frail grandpa who dies of infection. Same same, right?

I did just fly yesterday, I would say about half of the people in the airport and on the plane wore a mask, the other half didn’t. There is no longer a requirement to wear a mask, and I even saw staff at the airport without masks.

So the farangs arent doing anything wrong. Half the asians on Air Asia no mask either.

Why don't the masked people respect the non mask people? Non masked people arent breaking any laws. Maybe the masked people should learn what respect means. Very arrogant to force your views onto others.

was in bkk the other day on the skytrain all wearing masks some double and announcements advising same I corrected my stance quickly its rude not to.

In my country Ireland radio adds still advise people to where mask and wash hands.

We just returned home to the North from a short break in Pattaya where virtually every tourist was unmasked and every Thai was masked. Some sad git in a restaurant took us to task for wearing masks, we said we do what the locals do and he laughed as if we were children or stupid. Two days later we all came down with covid, first time in three and a half years.
