Is there any talk of extending the 45-day visa after March?  What happens, if anything, if someone enters in March will they still get the 45 days.

Personally can't see reason to extend the 45 day, temporary visa exempt entry.

Enter on or prior march 31 and you will be stamped in for 45 days.

Sweet deal.

Then you (imo) will receive 30 day visa exempt stamp.

You could consider a tourist visa entry 60 days

How long do you plan to stay in Thailand?

well since high season sorta ends about april 1 and the tourists arrival numbers will likely take a dive as they always do at end of high season some might wonder why you would want to further discourage low season arrivals to stay a bit longer with a bit fewer hassles?  Keep the 45 days would be a logical plan....(i know i know...logic?  what's that)

Why don't neighbouring countries such as Laos, Cambodia , Vietnam etc have 45 day visa exempt entries with all the attached border run options.

Thailand has many sweet options such as 30 day visa exempt entry with the option of 30 day extension

I was not referring to "eventually" but rather the planned trip that you are posting about.

Well then there is the 687 day overstay option or if a really long time the 6087 day overstay option.
