The best way is to soak the foot in warm water and then just

clean all of the junk out using a (large) injection needle or a small

sharp knife.

Blood will flow so it is not for the faint of heart to do.

Flush it out with warm water and clean with alcohol or betadine.

I would follow up with a wrapping it so it stays clean and also give antibiotic

for a week or so.

It looks kind of messy but cleaning it properly is the only way to do it.

We had a bunch of birds having it over the past years and all did recover.
