A crisis is unfolding in the hospitals of Beijing.

Inside the eastern Chaoyang Hospital, COVID-positive patients fill the wards. Almost everyone is elderly and only the lucky ones have beds. Many more line the hospital floor.

 

This is clearly a place where the virus is surging, and the system is straining.

What heard yesterday they’re opening up and I guess they’re letting their people start to travel to other countries again well that happens but definitely be a new surge of the virus. I hope they let all the people that want to travel to Thailand take a test when they arrive to be interesting to see what the results of the TIT

A. The Chinese economy has well and truly flatlined

or

B. Seeing the results of the last infection damage on the world's economy they want to do the same again

It does seem a bit rum that with covid now surging there amongst their vast population , they are opening the floodgates and allowing international travel. Any short term benefit to Thai tourism could well be biting its derriere in a few monthe time.

Some countries like India & Japan now are increasing restrictions for travelers from China. Japan will require covid test upon arrival, those who test positive will have to quarantine for 7 days. Japan restricting plans to increase flights to China.

Reading the different reports from Chinese medical facilities/professionals on social media (before the posts were deleated by the Chinese censors) one gets the feeling that COVID had spread across China at an alarming rate.

 

With just over half the Chinese population having received 2 China-made COVID vaccines, and a low percentage of the elderly having any vaccine, it is no wonder the elderly are the main victims now.

 

As some Western medical scientists have noted, the chances of new COVID mutations appearing in China is high.

 

The chances of mass Chinese international tourism within the next few months are probably low, unless foreign carriers are permitted to enter and leave China and insane (?) countries allow Chinese carriers to bring Chinese tourists to their shores.  As many countries seem to have COVID "under control" domestically, do these countries want a new mega waves of COVID  to further damage their economies and push thier health care systems past breaking point?

This is my main concern.

 

I'd support 7 days quarantine for ALL travellers from China, irrespective of a test result. Covid tests are very unreliable, I was unwell for over 48 hours before I finally tested positive for Covid. Plus most of them willl have had less effective Chinese vaccines.

Nah! Money over everything else including the Health and welfare of the population.

Get those Tourists here at any cost.

You make some very valid points. The problem is Thailand and TAT may not see it as everyone else does?They seem to want the money first and worry about potential risks later? In this case if the floodgates are opened and 5million Chinese come to Thailand, will it overwhelm the hospitals in Thailand, will the authorities be taking any responsibility for checking incoming passengers from China, PCR tests etc? Who knows?

But hospitals make big profits and employ lots of Thais.

Yes, but it would mean all the resources would be tied up, plus infections will spread to the Thais, especially the old people and would make it even worse? The hospitals might make money, but at what cost?

Well, there are plenty of people here who seem oblivious to the risk of infection. I understand that vaccinated people can get it but their risk of death is low. They can, however, pass it on to the unvaccinated.

 

I suspect the airports will have their temperature scanners on and pull people over if they are suspect. Thailand needs tourists because they cannot invest in manufacturing without an educated population.

It was about a month ago that China was having demonstrations/riots, seems the populace was going stir-crazy with the lockdowns and took to the streets.  It worried the gov't, they lifted the quarantine, the crowd cheered and went home.  And the cases have been piling up since.

It is now "this is what you want, this is what you get" time.

Which is fair enough within China but to allow international travel by hordes of desperate to travel Chinese is extremely irresponsible , inconsiderate and downright dangerous.

Nothing surprising about it. It was stated that when they removed the restrictions it would spread as little immunity in population due to lockdowns.

One wonders if it was deliberate to punish a rebellious population that had been demonstrating against lock downs.

I wonder how all those demonstrators feel now that they got their wish?

India has already made RT-PCR compulsory for travellers from 6 countries, unfortunately including Thailand. Considering that the cheapest Rt-PCR here costs 2000 baht (versus 1/10th of that in India), it's going to be bonanza time again for all the hospitals here.

There's actually a larger issue implicit in the generally bad state of Chinese health care. Because China so underfunds its social services, that means the Chinese have to rely on their savings for health emergencies and for their old age. Which in turn means that efforts to get Chinese consumers to spend more and help lessen reliance on foreign trade to boost the economy have dubious prospecs for success.

I think people should accept how most people feel. Right now, in Britain, whether Covid kills people or not, most people simly don't care.
Even if a new outbreak of Covid is in the newspapers, the vast majority of people in Britain are not going to accept another lockdown.

A load of Chinese tourists in London ?  Just about everybody in Britian doesn't care.  We're more concerned about bed bugs moving from Paris to London.
