Looking at taking a trip down to Bangkok in March. How much does it cost to take one of the boats in the port of Bangkok down to one of the islands? Any ideas? We’ve taken the boats through the channel before but what about the boats to the islands? Any information on that would be appreciated.

And don't say Phuket.

If there was a "boat" it would be a cruise ship and two or three days via Singapore and the pirate infested straight of Mallaca.

Places like Ko Samui and other islands in that area or closer. There’s at least a few others I could name.

I did not know Bangkok had "ports" for pleasure boats, ferries.  Do you know where they are located?  Can you send a map link?  Would like to know as well for the future

I know about this ferry from Sattahip to Ko Samui.

An overnight cruise of about 15 hours. And whether it operates at all is a game of luck.

From Bangkok? Never heard about. Would be substantially longer like 17 hours or so.

Lengthy nightly bus trip to Surat Thani and the short ferry over to Samui as always has been.

Whatever trip you book, check carefully/thoroughtly/inspect/count whether there's enough proper life vests on board, enough for all passengers and all crew. 

 

Don't accept simple throw away statements like 'yes we have life vests'.

 

Perhaps even buy/take your own life vests. And have them with you at all times.

It could be the Khlong Saen Saep boat service that runs through the city rather than a tour.

 

Does anyone know if the Krungkasem boat service between Hua Lamphong and Thewarat market are still running and are they still free?

Options:  

1) Bangkok Airways - BKK-Samui: Get to Samui and chill out.

2) Thai Smile - BKK-Surrathani, then ferry to Samui.

3) Bus to Surrthani - transfer to ferry

4) Mini-van + Ferry 

5) Train - BKK-Surrathani, then ferry to Samui.

 

(options 3 & 4 would be rather horrific).

Ignoring the babble, the short story is there are no ferries from Bangkok to the Gulf Islands. 

To get to them you need to fly or travel south by land (bus, car, train) to find a ferry port.

Yup. Also check life insurance/travel insurance.

Getting in a boat in Thailand could be considered an "extreme sport" and not covered.????????

Good points, also ask he owner/operator of the vessel to show you what insurance they have in regrad to passengers and check that the last renewal notice has been paid.

 

And check what the insurance states in terms of oeners/operators responsibilities that connect to seaworthiness, mechanical condition and safety requirements.

 

I guess it's obvious I'm rather negative about travel by boat/sea ferries etc.

Yeah... but they still used an exceptionally fast boat to get down through the Malacca straights, round Singapore and back up through the gulf all in a few hours !!
