If they are smart they will hire a Dutch company. They have all the right gear and could raise up that ship in no time flat. However the contract will most probably go to friends of the friends and will be a debacle.

The Dutch are certainly the leaders in this field, however 3.5 million dollars is not going to even come close to the cost of raising this ship, 20 miles offshore and sunk in 50 metres of water; let alone pay for the repairs it will need to put it back into service. Hells bells, I doubt it would even pay the cost of assembling and shipping in the kit you would need!

However, as a "budget" it may well have certain attractions.

When i read this i think that they just want to get it repaired because of all the kickbacks that they can hide. Also if it is out of service they will get less of a budget. So i think this is not driven from realism but greed.

Why?  Just ask Pray-hoot to buy a new boat. He's thrown billions upon billions upon billions at the Military over the past 8 years, so why stop now.  Oh!  There's an (fake) election upcoming and 95% of Thai people want him out as PM.  Next General, please step up to the PM chair, as the election means nothing given the PM is chosen by the unelected junta Senate

Given the ship in question had just been recommissioned following a refit the RTN has a lot invested here. I guess the admiral who make the announcement does not realise that treating the vessel like this will void the warrantee on all the shiny new electronics and most other fittings. There were reports of a breached hull in some of the early reports.

Might be useful to raise it to determine why it sunk, but another refit???

Agree, very valuable to get clear specific facts about why it sunk.

...No Mention Of The Firm That Was Paid To Refurbish The Vessel...(?)

...No Mention Of The Reason It Sank...(?)

...Off 'Scott-Free'...(?)...

...And Now To Just Blindly Throw More Money Away...(?)

...Sounds Like A Plan...NOT...

...Sad....Disappointing...

Would you buy a used car that was submerged in a flood?

Why in gods name would you try to salvage a sunken ship.. just think of all the potential electrical issues for starters.

Exactly.  The saltwater damage is irreversible.

Adm. Adung said no crew or maritime passengers remained on the warship as an order had been given the night it sank to abandon it.

Drivers went down to explore and map out plans to salvage it but they were unable to enter the hull because of a risk of the ship tilting further which would have endangered them.

Divers did not search inside tthe hull yet the Admiral knows there are no crew entombed within. Of course he did say 'on' and not 'in' so perhaps he is correct.......????

Bids to raise the vessel will be accepted only from relatives but expect them to be few if only 100 million Baht is available. Get it up, drain it, a quick spray with WD40 and up on blocks in a childrens playground.

฿100m needed to salvage the sunken HTMS Sukhothai

The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) is going to need about 100 million baht to raise the sunken HTMS Sukhothai from the bottom of the Gulf of Thailand and 12 suitably equipped companies have offered to undertake the work.

A well-informed naval source said that Admiral Adung Phan-iam, the commander of the RTN fleet, had instructed the committee selecting the qualified company to speed up the selection process.

The source said that one of the conditions set by the RTN for the salvage operation is that the ship must be recovered in its present shape without being cut into sections.

Raise the ship, get everything off of it that is able to be repaired, then sell the hull for scrap.

Who would want to sail in a ship that has sank? What ever flaw the ship had that caused it

to sink, should keep the Navy from wanting this ship back in service.

Non navy politicians should not be involved with this situation. IMO

In a country where people avoid buying 2nd hand houses lest there be ghosts of people who died there?

Nothing that couldn't be sorted out by the right amulets.

By a stroke of luck the "go to man' for such items in the Royal Thai Navy happens to have a lot of time on his hands at the moment, as the ship he was captain of is the one at the bottom of the Gulf of Thailand!

One key question would be exactly when the order was given to abandon ship.  I suspect the Admiral may be proven incorrect.

Leave it where it is and spend the money on something worthwhile, like badly needed infrastructure.

100 million baht is about a whopping 3 million dollars.......I bet this is pocket change for the big boys......

Even if the ship is raised, what will you find Gold-nope   Silver-nope  valuable cargo-nope  a first class ship-nope

You will have a old and tired ship that will need a 100% complete overhaul .....

Every item inside the Hull like wiring, switch gear, Galley's crews quarters will have to be ripped out till only the enhines and heavy plant is left so not worth salvaging it. Even if it was brought up the scrap value would probably not cover the cost's to recover it.
